I have a question about the Bushi subclass for Fighters. They're described as warriors of the common people, usually men of low birth. Their maneuvers, however, are all based on Intelligence, and several of their features reference Intelligence as well. Aside from this generally being a dump stat for any non-spellcasting Fighter, from a lore perspective it seems like most lowborn people in a fantasy setting would NOT have a very high Intelligence score, given the education available to them. Since the resource they draw upon is ki, which is usually rooted in Wisdom, I'm wondering if this subclass was meant to be Wisdom based, or if this is the intended layout.

Sorry to leave more critique, just, another odd thing about the Kensai. It seems that it learns a couple spells, like Disguise Self. A spellcasting modifier is needed to determine seeing through the disguise. I would imagine you'd use Charisma, but it doesn't mention it.

I've only just noticed an issue with the Kensai's feature, battle clarity. It says you can use a bonus action to end the paralyzed condition, but you are unable to use bonus actions while paralyzed. This is confirmed in the player's handbook, page 189.

As well, grace says, in the class table, it gets an upgrade at 13th level, but the feature description says 15th.

Hey there! Just pointing out that the Witch Hunter subclass for the fighter is missing the 18th subclass feature from what I can tell.

It actually isn't, it just does what Battlemaster does. It's 18th level feature is wrapped up in an earlier feature, Specifically Bane of Evil.

Hello, I was also hoping for a POD version. Is this something that will happen and if so what is the expected time frame? Thank you for the product.

I was looking over the Elemental Burst spell and it said that for that spell you can use any of the five elements, but the air element is not listed as an option. Is that intentional or a mistake?

CREATOR
Hi Clay,

The five elements don't include air. If you check the Wu Jen subclass for the wizard, you'll see the same five elements. In the real world, these five elements are called Wu Xing and originate in China.
The Shugenja subclass for the cleric, however, uses the classic four elements.

The Shogun does not have the option for great weapon fighting, but has the option for dueling, even though using a shield is not exactly something that would strike one as a very oriental thing to do. Is this intentional?

Hi Gage,

It is actually mentioned under Armor and Shields that shield usage isn't very widespread and not considered an honorable thing to do.
If a shogun picks Dueling as his or her fighting style, you can absolutely just wield a weapon and no shield. That said, I might switch it with two-weapon fighting.

I was looking over the spells and noticed, while reading the Commune With Spirit and Commune With Greater Spirit spells, that they seem to be mechanically identical to each other with the exception being that Great Spirit costs a 5th level slot as opposed to the lesser's 3rd. Was there an intended mechanical difference for these? If not, what sort of suggestions do you have to make them distinct from one another in play?
Customer avatar
Marc A September 25, 2018 8:34 am UTC
CREATOR
Hi Kaine,

The mechanical difference is that the Greater version of the spell can contact a kami. The Shijin, for example, are kami.
Kami are revered religious creatures, while a spirit can be any type of spirit that isn't a kami.
Generally, you can expect better answers from the Greater spell.
Page 6 of Monsters of the Orient expands on this further.

Hello! Love your book, I have a question: are fireworks in any of your notes? I figured a book about the orient would mention them but either I missed it or isn't there. I would love a supplement with maybe an archetype or two, or even a new class entirely, seriously love your book. Today I helped one of my players make an aasimar cotton nezumi (ki-rin squirrel lol)

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for your kind words.
The ki-rin squirrel concept sounds absolutely hilarious and fun!
I don't have any plans for any new classes, but do have a few subclasses in the works.

Fireworks are mentioned for the Winter's End Festival on page 29. The same thing is mentioned in the Nian entry in Monsters of the Orient.
Other than that, there isn't anything. My thinking was that a DM could easily add material costs for various fireworks.

Can't wait to see, and thanks for the heads up! I will have to look into it some more, and thinking on it, I could easily flavor a wizard as such to make their magic through fireworks. It's just something I wanted to mention, thanks for replying when you were able ^_^

hi there! love the supplement! I use it for my 5e legend of the 5 rings campaign. Question for you though, the spell, "kiss of the spider" does not show up in any spell lists when looking at the "sorcerer spells" or the "bard spells" what classes can use this spell?

Hi Aniruddh,

Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot.

Kiss of the Spider is intended as a druid spell. It should also be transmutation. That's fixed in the next update.

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the late reply. I didn't get a notice about any unread messages.

Thank you for your kind words! Monsters of the Orient is available as Print-on-Demand now. Hopefully, the rest will follow in due time.

I'd also love to have a big adventure like you suggest.
However, I'm sorry to say that an adventure that spans so many levels isn't realistic for me to produce.
That said, I am working on an introductory adventure for the setting that could span a few levels. That will be my first attempt at creating an adventure though, so let's see how that goes first.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
