Realmscrawl Campaign Map 05: Tilverton

Realmscrawl Campaign Map 05: Tilverton is the first in what is hoped to be a series of maps and gazetteers detailing the Eastern Heartlands of the Forgotten Realms at a six mile per hex scale.

After due consideration, I'm changing my methodology on this line.

First, I'll be adding a very simple line-item gazetteer to the PWYW map. That will give everyone the very basics for each location on the map. This is much in the same vein as the original Wilderlands booklets from Judges Guild back in the day. Bare minimal detail, but enough to get started.

Second, instead of a full gazetteer, I'll simply release mini-modules of specific, small and mid-size locations. These will usually clock in at three to 18 pages, with the location designed as an adventure rather than as a gazetteer entry, and range in price from $0.50 to $3.00. Each will include the full details on the location (and the surrounds, one or more hexes worth), maps of the sites, encounter tables, and so forth.

Third, if those sell well, I might tackle some of the larger sites, such as Hollow Mountain, Thunderdeep, and so forth, either as a larger module or perhaps as a series of smaller modules, each detailing two to four levels.

And of course, I really want to publish my version of Tilverton... that one will probably end up having to be broken into district booklets.

We'll see how this new method works. Plans might change again.

The line-item gazetteer should be up sometime this coming week. The first mini-module shortly thereafter.

More as developments warrant...

The year is 1287 DR, the Year of the Smoky Moon, near the end of one era and the beginning of a new. The Eastern Heartlands are in chaos, as Cormyr and Sembia are wracked with civil war and the Dalelands and Cormanthor are under siege by dark elves, humanoids, and other monsters.

It is a time of war, a time of heroes, and a time of villains. It is a time of change, a time of opportunity, for good and for evil. The old traditions of feudal kings and the sacred bonds of barons and knights are giving way to the customs of mercantile princes and the profane contracts of guildmasters and adventurers.

The old world, however, does not give over gracefully to the new, and the fading lords of chivalry cleave desperately to their waning treasure and power, even as the rising masters of trade seek to claim the wealth and authority they feel more fit to wield…

I have added the raw Hexographer file to the product for those who wish to use Hexographer to modify the map for their own personal campaign use. I ask that you do not sell or give away copies of the maps thus generated without express permission. Thank you!

I should note that, if you acquire the map for free the first time, and like it enough that you want to see the gazetteer come out, you can always pay something again through the Pay What You Want system. Two bits, two bucks, whatever you can offer helps move that needle closer toward release of the gazetteer. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
