City Encounters

ADD TO WISHLIST >

So, your characters are in a city...what now?

City Encounters details ten short encounters that you can throw at your party.  The encounters provide a mix of combat, skill and social challenges.  Most can be easily modified for almost any character levels.

Encounters include:

  • The Spectator: A porter trips, unleashing a nasty surprise
  • The Garbage Monster: Oops, a deadly wrong turn…
  • Tomino’s Hell: The characters are attacked by a lunatic.
  • Stampede: The characters get caught in the middle of a stampede of wild boar.
  • The Rat Queen: The night could end in lucky passion...or unlucky death.
  • Stoolball: A group of orphans try to engage the characters in a friendly ball game.
  • The Shifty Shell: The characters engage in a rigged game of chance.
  • Rag and Bone Man: The characters have a unique opportunity.
  • Damsel in Distress: A “lady” asks for help.
  • Knucklebones: The characters join in a bit of gambling.

These encounters are set in Waterdeep, but can easily be set in any urban area.  This product is a companion to Faction Folio: Waterdeep, but you don't need it to use these encounters.

Included: an actual, legitimate curse in the Tomino's Hell chapter. 10/10, would condemn own players again.

I had fun with that one. I like to try to mix in a bit of history and/or "real" legend on occasion. In fact, I'm working on an adventure inspired by the Mutter Museum in Philadelphia.

Thanks for the comment!

Hello David, excellent content! I've got half a mind to drop some of these guys in my Oota campaign as well :) I just posted my first piece here on GM's guild and I wanted to ask you a few general questions about your number of downloads on this product and other stuff like that if you didn't mind answering them. Can you shoot me an email? leviclark117 at gmail.com please and thanks!

I've been reading through and I can see quite a few of these will be able to be tweaked slightly so I can drop them into my OotA campaign. I have to use The rag and bone man encounter though.

I might even make it a 2 man operation. A father and son :P (I hope thats the reference you were making there)

Overall I liked it, especially the encounters that included some real-world history.

The Knucklebones NPCs seemed pretty repetitive, like they were pulled from a random generator with too few variables; however the concept was solid and the game rules were good.

Also, I'd have liked to see a short synopsis at the beginning of each encounter to give me an idea of what was coming. I had to get to the third or fourth paragraph in most of them before I knew what was going on.

This is a solid product that'll definitely see some use or inspire some encounters at my table. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I have three urban "adventures" that are close to being ready. I'm just trying to decide if I want to release them as isolated adventures or part of a story arc.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
