Book of Shadows - player options, monsters and magical items

Book of Shadows

The Book of Shadows contain player options wrought in darkness, shadowy creatures and magical items of light and dark. The Book of Shadows contain:

  • 1 New Racial Option. No longer relegated to being an elven subrace, this version of the shadar-kai has its own unique flavor and powerful abilities.
  • 4 New Archetypes. Perform in the shadows with the College of Twilight, spread darkness with the Darkness Domain, turn the shadows against your foes as a Shadowdancer, and frustrate your enemies as a Shadowcaster.
  • 6 New Creatures. Challenge your players with the Gloom Stalker, Nightcrawler, Veserab, Shadar-kai and Shade.
  • 6 New Magic Items. Employ powerful items of light and darkness, such as Haunt, a fearsome shortbow that can raise those it slays as dark shadows, or the Shroud of Shadows, a cloak which lend its shadowy nature to its wearer.

Update 1.1. Changed Potent Spellcasting to Divine Strike and corrected minor errors in the Shadar-kai statblocks, due to input from Ra J.

Update 2.0. Complete overhaul of layout, mechanics and design!

I really got excited when I saw this title and I immediately downloaded it. I'm incorporating the concepts of Shadow Magic and Shadow Casters into my game. I'm having difficulty with the School of Twilight that you all present. I think that it is very generic and not that fleshed out. I wonder if you are thinking of adding an update that perhaps has a more "shadowy" spell list for the Bard because I think it kinda deserves one. However, if you aren't I wonder if you would perhaps be up for having one submitted to you all for consideration?

Hi Brent!

I'm sorry to hear that you weren't impressed with the College of Twilight. If I was to look at the subclasses in the compendium objectively, I think I can agree that the College of Twilight is probably the least inspired of the lot. Bonus spells, however, aren't usually in the bard's colleges, so that would probably stick out too much. But feel free to let me know what you have in my mind, I'm always open for suggestions :)

Best regards,

Also, just a minor design point on the 8th Level Darkness Domain feature "Potent Spellcasting". The only Cleric cantrip that does damage is Sacred Flame, and that damage is radiant. Giving Darkness Clerics an ability that only makes them more powerful dealers of radiant damage seems off. So, if you do not find it bad form, I'll substitute in a Divine Strike feature that does additional necrotic or psychic damage (have not decided yet) instead.

Psychic would be if I think the fear/horror/mental trauma of Darkness is more applicable. And also for balance purposes, very few creatures are resistant or immune to psychic damage. Necrotic damage would be the choice if I think Darkness is more about the life-sapping power of the void and nothingness in general. Also a lot more creatures (such as Aaasimar PC's) are resistant to necrotic damage.

Anyway I digress. I just wanted to bring up the design point regarding the cleric cantrips.

First of, thanks for your review. I really appreciate you buying the product, going through it, and taking the time to write a well thought out review. Thank you.

I initially gave the Darkness Cleric the Potent Spellcasting ability to mirror its light counterpoint, but you do raise a valid point. Potent spellcasting is a pretty underwhelming ability to being with, and in this case it seems to also be contrary to the flavor of the domain. I think that I'll indeed give it Divine Strike with necrotic damage (psychic damage probably being too strong). Much appreciated - I'll update the document shortly! :)

First, this is a fantastic product. Initially, I thought $2.99 was too steep a price for a DM Guild publication. And it probably still is. $2.49 might be a more attractive price point, while not completely cheapening the product. I am very glad to pay my three dollars for this, though. I'll go into all of that in my official review.

For this discussion though, I'd just like to point out that your monster stat blocks for Shadowstep don't match the Shadowstep Shadar-Kai racial ability you gave. The key omission is the "you can see" portion of the ability. It makes it seem like the monster/NPC version is more powerful than the PC version. A Shadar-Kai PC cannot Shadowstep into closed closet, but a Shadar-Kai Soldier could, as it is written now.

Thanks again for the review (I just commented above). The shadar-kai ability was re-written a few times, and it seems I haven't realigned them all. Sharp eyes - I'll make sure to bring the shadar-kai soldiers up to standard (no cheating, DM!).

Thanks! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
