The House of the Midnight Violet

ADD TO WISHLIST >

"This was a great adventure to drop into my ongoing campaign - it hits just the right kinds of horror notes, and has a really interesting story that unfolds at a nice pace."

"A well-written adventure through a mansion filled with dark secrets."

The House of the Midnight Violet is a 3+ hour standalone adventure designed for 5th Edition.  The print version of the adventure is intended for four to five characters of level 4 to 6, and includes scaling suggestions up to level 12.  It is set in a non-specific location and can be included in nearly every campaign.

The party is recruited by an innkeeper to recover a flower from a nearby mansion.  He is an alchemist and he is running short on his supply of the Midnight Violet.

Town rumors warn the party to stay away.  But, that's unlikely given that your heros are mighty and brave.

While exploring the mansion, the adventurers will learn the story of the family that once lived there and what caused their demise.  That is...if they live that long.

Two new creatures and one new magic item are introduced in this adventure.

Great as a spooky one-shot, horror adventure, or for Halloween!

Now available as a Roll20 Addon One-Shot Adventure! Also available for Fantasty Grounds!

We ran this last night and had a blast. If only it was because things went exactly the way you outlined them. In the end, they did get the flowers...and burned the house down.

If you're interested, we'll be uploading the venture as our Hallowe'en episode next Wednesday, the podcast is Echoes of Ages. I'd love your thoughts on how it was run as well. Admittedly I had to wrap it up quick on the back end due to a couple of players having time restrictions. I didn't expect my fools, er...players, to do half the stuff they did. Easily the most off the rails one-shot we've done.

Thanks for a great adventure!

Hi Adam!

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the adventure! Others have asked the same question, and I have considered writing a sequel several times. I'm just haven't put pencil to paper yet. I hope to do so someday, I'm just not sure when.

Didn't get to complete it since we had been playing for 4+ hours and people had to go. Probably would have taken 5 hours at a minimum. They got the flowers, but we finished it there, never finding TimTom.

I made some maps for this adventure using Inkarnate. I would like to send them to you to use.

I ran this adventure for my party as a short side quest. I was able to run it fairly easily with limited prep and my players enjoyed it. It's a simple haunted house adventure with enough story to last about 3 hours.

I plugged this in to Storm King's Thunder during some cross country travel and the party loved it. When the party finished the full adventure over a year later this was still one of the adventures they kept referring back to as one of their favorites. Well done. Really creepy.

What a fabulous & well written one-shot! My DM had to up the encounter difficulty a bit & de-power us a bit to make it work. He put on visual & audio ambiance to enhance the creepy feeling & oh we had so much fun for our Halloween session!

Halloween's just around the corner, could thinks be tweaked to allow a party of 5, all level 2's to run this ?

I believe you could, but you'd need to make some creature and DC adjustments. You could do that fairly easily by reducing the AC by 1 or 2, slightly decreasing the HP of the creatures (or the number of creatures), and decreasing the DCs for the saves by 2. The toughest threats are the swarm of porcelain dolls and the final Big Bad.

Hoping to run this for my online group on a VTT
Is there a version of the map where "secret door" and other such text isn't written on and so not to give away the suprise?
Having a read through I am hoping they enjoy it!

Unfortunately, I do not have any maps without the tags for this adventure. I apologize. My newer products do come with DM and Player versions.

When I first published this adventure and commissioned the maps, I wasn't familiar with VTT play.

Currently running this for my group, who are very much enjoying it.

I've made a few small changes to suit me -- I didn't like the logic of the map, so moved the kitchen/dining/courtyard to a separate outbuilding, and the cellar area to the back of a cave behind the kitchen garden used for cold storage, adjusting the diary appropriately. I also ripped the diary in half, with the first, more innocuous, half being found outside the mansion.

I'm hoping for Mr. TimTom to take advantage of the height of the cave to avoid combat and fly off to be a future antagonist, but we'll see how fast the party is at taking him down. Also decided that he ought to have summons even for a low-level party, and am using some Dretches reimagined as creepy voodoo doll poppets.

The adventure could totally be run as-is, of course, but I had even more fun hanging some bits of my own invention off the solid framework.

I ran this for my group for Halloween, and it was a blast. We all had a lot of fun with the adventure in the haunted mansion.
This is a good adventure with original enemies and a bitter-sweet story, with some room to add some of your own creativity. For example, I had magic candies near the entrance of the mansion for the players to grab. Later on they could use it to drive the cats away (in the garden) without harming them.
Overall, I highly recommend.

A wonderfully creative adventure that has been a joy to prepare and an even more joyful adventure to set my party loose in on an eerie Friday the 13th! If there are anymore, count me in in buying it! I really enjoyed how clearly laid out the adventure was and the room for adding in your own flare and twists on the situations the party put themselves in. Please write more!

This is a fantastic adventure with excellent writing. I did this as a Halloween adventure for my players and it was the first time I ever ran from a module. Everything is given to the DM in nice and neat packages with little to no room for error. The puzzles within are a nice challenge, especially if your players dont take notes. 10/10. There are just enough spaces to allow some DM fluff and freedom for spooky shenanigans such as illusions for Timtom to mess with the players.

The monster designs are masterful in my opinion. The doll encounter was excellent. The courtyard horde fight was hilarious and led to one of the creatures somehow becoming an NPC to return in the future after it rolled several crits, terrorizing the wizard and the other players laughing uncontrollably. Oh and I gave the players a bag of looting and they proceeded to dismantle and steal every piece of mahogany furniture in the house to later repair and furnish their future guild hall.

As soon as the players...See more

Great adventure and really well written! I have one question that I am not 100% sure about... So when the players open the chest in the basement and find the smaller chest a voice speaks "The loveliest of views." How should the players figure out the phrase True Love? This is the only thing that I am unsure of.

Thanks for a cool Halloween adventure - will be running it next week!! :) :)

The "Horrendous Stench" feature from the Greater Ghast is also in Mr. TimTom's statblock. I assume this is a mistake?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
