The Lurker Beneath Red Larch - Adventure

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Ribbons of blood dance through the air, tracing wide crimson arcs before fraying into thousands upon thousands of bright red droplets. The cheerful tavern atmosphere evaporates in a moment, rent apart by screams and cries.

A woman with grey hair stands near the bar, grasping at the dagger in her throat with fingers made slippery by blood. She sways and collapses. More screams.

A man stands before her. He is holding the hilt of the dagger, but lets it slip from a gory hand as the woman falls. He freezes for a moment, then spins and sprints away, knocking aside people as he goes.

A young, flaxen-haired woman at the back of the tavern cries out, “Stop him! Stop him!” as he approaches the entrance – the entrance where you and your comrades are standing.

What do you do?

A lonely outsider murders a popular village local before a room full of witnesses. But could he be innocent?

The Lurker Beneath Red Larch is a 4-6 hour adventure for characters of 3rd-4th level. It is full of roleplaying, problem solving and challenging combat encounters.

Any recommendations on how to present the story of Randall Nightwall to the PCs? Or that he is the Nothic? I can't figure out how to get that part of the story in there.

I just got this as part of your complete collection and can't wait to run it for my group!

Cheers

[spoilers]

Hi Jamie, clues regarding Randall Nightwall can be found on page 4 - the PCs should discover these while talking to the villagers. This information should emerge from any discussion of Grindol. A villager might say, "Grindol? Yes, he was living in the Nightwall cottage. A bad reputation, that place - many say it's cursed." That will lead to more discussion about the cottage.

You will find that the PCs will naturally deduce the identity of the Nothic when they finally meet him.

Hope you enjoy! MTB

When you say you can run this with minimal preparation, its true!

Had 3 of my 6 players cancel due to sickness the other night and have had this as one of my emergency 1 shot games. I read through it when I bought it but not since then. Printed it out and ran it straight off the bat with no prep. Had 3 level 5 players for it which made a few encounters a bit easy. For example the sorcerer fireballed the giant rats so for the fight in the mud pool I changed them to fire Mephits just for the fire immunity.

Also gave the statue at the end a AC and a damage threshold so it had a chance to last a round or two before being destroyed. Had a lot of fun running this. Another good job.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
