Layout Elements: Blue Marble Backgrounds

ADD TO WISHLIST >

We've all seen them--the background images behind the text on the pages of our favorite RPG products that make it seem like it's old paper, or grass, or even a mysterious spell book with soft arcane symbols in the margins.  While they're not necessary, they certainly boost the visual appeal of what we read!

Finding those kinds of backgrounds legally can be challenging, especially if you don't have a strong familiarity with a graphics program so you can make your own.  And usually, when you do find one you can use, your only choice is to use the same background image over and over again for each page of your product.

And sometimes, those images are just too over the top--it's your ideas that should take center stage, not the decorative filligree around the edges that dresses things up so much it's distracting.  Finding a subtle background image that strikes the delicate balance between "too little" and "too strong" can be like finding the mysterious bowl of porridge that's just right.

Perhaps you've found it.

This package contains 69 background images for your use when formatting your material for Dungeon Masters Guild.  Each features an ice blue marbelized paper with a soft canvas texture and a slight gradation from light to dark on one side.  But each of the images is subtley different, providing maximum variety. It's a hefty series of files.

Organized around the concept of a printed book, 25 images are intended for the left pages while 25 more images are for the right.  A soft gray line frames the side and bottom edges of each page.  Each page features a bit of "distressing"--dirt, stains, smears, brush strokes, dripping water color, etc.  No two pages are alike.

In addition there are 8 additional pages that don't have any staining or smudges on them at all, each with a slightly different background marbelization so none of them are the same.

In addition to that there are 6 more images that don't have any distressing or any gray framing lines whatsoever!

These images are 8.5" x 11", 150dpi JPGs, and designed to be dropped in as background images to your Microsoft Word Dungeon Masters Guild adventure template.  No overpowered layout program that you have to master, no graphic design program expertise required. And since they're 150dpi, they work within One Book Shelf's suggested PDF upload guidelines (which results in a smaller, more easily downloadable file than if they were 300dip or larger).

Within Word, you can format the image to match the full page of your product, and even adjust the transparency to make it even lighter if you desire.

These background images can be used by themselves or in conjunction with other art.  The featured examples below use graphic imagery from Graphic Elements I, II, III, and IV, and adjusted and layered in using Photoshop.  Using more advanced graphics programs may enable you to change the color, saturation, and vibrancy of the pages to your taste!

Did you accidentally put the wrong files in this? These don't look blue at all. The files are even named "...purple.jpg"

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
