Classed NPC Quick Build Guide (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Want to create non-player characters based on a class without spending hours working on them?

This is the guide you've been waiting for.

The Classed NPC Quick Build Guide contains notes on creating class-based NPCs, over 190 pages of stat blocks for every character class in the Player's Handbook with select archetypes from the Player's Handbook and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and ranging even-numbered levels from 2 to 20, along with tables of basic personality traits, ideals, and flaws to give your NPCs a start on the road to infamy.

This guide will save you that most precious of commodities - time - and let you spend it creating a world of adventure and intrigue for your players.

Update: Added new archetypes from Xanathar's Guide to Everything.

Mark, is there a way I can contact you directly? I've converted all the NPCs to Fantasy Grounds for my own use, and would like to make it available to you.

Thanks for this, it's a really great guide and does a lot of the legwork while still following the guidelines for making NPCs laid out in the DMG.

The only thing that I could think of that would make this better is if it existed as a compendium on roll20 (same could be said for other virtual table tops I imagine). As it stands I'll have to copy and paste stat blocks out of this book and add them to entries in roll20. If however it were sold on the roll20 marketplace as a book containing stat blocks I could just pick a stat block directly and then edit and racial features and I'd be done, significantly cutting down on my prep time and making it possible to provide NPCs truly on the fly if I wanted to. This would be INVALUABLE and something I would definitely pay money for, and I'll bet a lot of other people would to.

Are you making any more like this, maybe for monsters? Or a further expansion? This is by far one of the most useful pieces I've found on here

I really like this tool. One question: under "How to Use This Product" on page 2, there's reference to a section on NPC race, but I don't find that section in the copy I downloaded. Page 3 has the "build examples", and page 4 starts out the stat blocks. Am I missing a section?

Hi Joseph. The section refers to the NPC Features table on page 282 of the Dungeon Masters Guide. That table lists racial features for all major Player's Handbook races except Human. I added a section for Humans, but didn't reprint the other race info from the DMG, because copyright issues.

Glad you like the guide!

This is great, thank you! One thing worth noting: my DMG has the NPC Features table on p. 282 and the Monsters with Classes on p. 283. You have them listed as p. 182 and 183.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
