Layout Elements: Blood Red

UPDATE:  Now there are new PNG versions of the files as well as the origninal JPG versions!  Two file formats for the price of one!

We've seen the layout of our favorite RPG products for years--wonderful content arranged in visually intriguing pages, often emulating worn pages or maps, and sometimes having a "torn paper" or stained look.  But unless your a graphic designer or expert layout person, it can sometimes be hard to make your material look like the polished work of the professionals.  These images are meant to help bridge that gap.  This collection of 22 stained and painted pages are intended to be used as background images when formatting the layout of your material.  They are not a substitute for illustration which is often visually substantive and delivers information to the reader in a visual form.  These pages are instead meant to emulate those pages that don't have beautifully illustrative materials on them (which, if you check carefully in your favorite RPG products, is usually the majority of the pages...).

These paint strokes done in deep and haunting blood red, charcoal black, and dusty grey are meant to break up the visual fatigue that can accompany reading long pages of blocky text.  Sometimes a larger header or a section of boxed text simply won't do it, but you can't afford the material-specific illustrative art that would ideally do the job.  Think about how you might use these options instead.  Beautiful red lines frame the outer and lower edges of the pages, and painterly stains and brush strokes embellish the corners, sides or top depending on the page.  The collection also includes two basic images of pages that don't have any paint strokes on them, and it's highly encouraged that those two images be used repetitively with the more artisitic pages inserted sparingly.

These images can be used in conjuntion with these collections of graphic imagery as they are in a similar style and similar color palette:

Graphic Art Elements I, Graphic Art Elements 2, Graphic Art Elements 3, Graphic Art Elements 4. Find more information at Coreyartus Cartography.

Each image is Letter-sized, 150dpi.  And now, as of 9/16/2017, there are PNG versions of the files as well as the original JPGs!  In addition to the images, a short guide and layout examples is included to help assist in their use.

Lots of products on DM's guild try to emulate the official product line. Originally I planned to do the same, but I was worried about the possible ramifications of making my products too similar. I started making changes to make my products st [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
