Murder in Baldur's Gate: Monster Stats for 5E

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Murder in Baldur's Gate is an adventure released in 2013, during the playtest period for D&D 5th edition. It is designed to be edition agnostic and as such the product itself doesn't feature any stat block for the monsters contained in the adventure. On the official Wizard of the Coast website there is a freely downloadable compendium which contains stat blocks for D&D 3.5, 4E and Next playtest. Since no official version of the 5E stat blocks has ever been released by Wizard of the Coast, I decided to make one myself, to allow this adventure to be run also by D&D 5E players and DMs.

This book contains all stat blocks needed to run Murder in Baldur's Gate, without the need for any additional manual. I've tried to stay as close as possible to the flavor of the NPCs and monsters as they were released for the Next playtest. I had to adjust some challenge ratings to fit the new rules, but it shouldn't be a problem, as the adventure itself doesn't give any indication about the challenge rating of the encounters, leaving space for the DM to tailor them to the party. I've tested these stat blocks myself, using them to run the adventure to a 4-players group.

I hope you find this product useful and if you have any suggestion feel free to contact me. Happy gaming, and remember that Boo is watching you from the Wide.

v1.1 changelog:
- reduced filesize by using optimal PDF compression settings
- included hyperlinks in document (actually, they were supposed to be there already in v1.0 but for some reason they were not there): now clicking names in the Table of Contents or anywhere a character is mentioned should bring you to that character's statblock

I... don't get it.
How is this different than the stats provided by WoTC in the link below?

Didn't Next become 5E?

At the time, classes were still being developed and balanced. 5e has slightly different balancing for characters, meaning mob stats needed to be adjusted. These are those adjustments.
Though to be completely fair both can probably be done interchangeably while only slightly affecting game play.

Hi Rodrigo,
As Hunter D said, the ones provided at the link you posted were for D&D 5E playtest (which was called Next). The game balance has changed a lot from the playtest to the final 5E. If you compare the stats presented in that link to those of monsters or NPCs of the same challenge rating from the Monster Manual you would notice big differences, e.g. in HPs. Also, skills in that document follow old playtest rules; the ruling for many of them have been changed in the passage to the final version of 5E.

In this booklet I've reworked all monster stats and updated skills ruling for them to be balanced according to D&D 5E. Also, I've flavored some of the NPCs a little more; for example Flaming Fist and Watch guards had the same stats in the original Next document, I've made all Flaming Fist ranks to have a consistent flavor, different from Watch guards. I've also given to NPCs skill proficiencies (which didn't exist in Next) consistent with their background and traits.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
