Classic Modules Today: S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In 1982, TSR published the module named “The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth” with the module code “S4”. It was written by Gary Gygax, and illustrated by Jim Holloway, Erol Otus, Jeff Easley, and Stephen D. Sullivan. It consisted of two 32 page booklets. The first dealt with the wilderness trek to find the caverns, as well as the caverns themselves. The second detailed new monsters and magical items not previously published. In 2004, for the 30th anniversary of the Dungeons & Dragons game, Dungeon magazine ranked this module the 22nd greatest adventure of all time.

This conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules and provides a reference sheet for encounters. It is intended for 5-6 characters of levels 7-10.

To use this conversion guide you will need a copy of "S4 The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth", originally available in hard-copy and now for sale in Digital format at DMsGuild.com.

"Classic Modules Today: B4 The Lost City" contains the OpenOffice/LibreOffice source files used to create this PDF. Visit Classicmodulestoday.com for instructions on creating your own classic module conversions and selling them on the DMs Guild.

Classic Modules Today are a series of products that convert early edition Dungeons & Dragons and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons adventure modules to the Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition rule set. They fully adhere to the rules set forth in the Community Content Agreement of the DMsGuild. The CCA states that adventure conversions must be:

"A streamlined, bare-bones conversion guide for someone who already owns the classic adventure — i.e., encounter-by-encounter conversion notes with any 5E stats needed, leaving out all other content."

For more information, download the free guide "Using Classic Modules Today Conversions".

Just purchased this - thank you for the conversion.
Question - I have downloaded 2 PDFs, one with "2021" in the title. Without me going through para by para in the two documents can you tell me what the difference is between the two (one is a 13 pager vs 17 pager)? I don't want to have to read a document to find out it has been superseded by the other.
Kind Regards
Ross

Hi Ross.
Last year I went through many of my conversions and removed the second "printer friendly" section. I received a lot of feedback from people who felt it was not necessary and decided to slim down the conversions by doing that. Some conversions had fixes for errors or missed content, but I honestly don't remember if this was one of those. The one with 2021 in the title is the most recent.
Best,
Mark

This is my first Classic Module conversion that I've bought. It is good, except for one thing: which magic items for which rooms? It would be much easier if you had the magic items listed per room. For example, the Gorgimera in room 16 (lesser caves) has a Horn of Fog. That's not listed. It's not the only one. So, trying to find the replacements as I play is frustrating. Why list the items in one list and alphabetical?

Hi Jim. The magic items are listed alphabetically with page number references to the original module for each item. This is done so you can look at the item or items in a room listing, then quickly find it on the alphabetical listing and see if it is unchanged for 5e, switched to a different item, or has a custom write-up. The design philosophy was for quick reference, which was thought to be better organized than listing by room. Opinions on this design idea will vary, but it is the standard for all CMT conversions.

The Horn of Fog is on the magic item list on the right column of page 5 (PDF page 6), between Demonomicon of Iggwilv and Javelin of Lightning. That item has a custom write-up on page 10 (PDF page 11) in the right column. The June 11th update is the most current update (same as the one I'm referencing on my computer right now), and your copy should be that one unless something is wrong. If your copy doesn't have those entries, let me know and I will re-upload the current version.

There are still items that I don't see on the list. Rug of Smothering is not listed at all. That's from room 11 downstairs. I do wish that you had listed which items went in which rooms. There is confusion at times over which item is really what. If it were done per room, it would be much easier to find. The way it is portrayed makes no sense. If you have the monsters listed by room, why not the treasure, too?

Hi Jim. I keep revisiting Tsojcanth, mainly because it was my first conversion. Every time I go back to it, I find new wrinkles that need smoothing out. I always ask myself if a change will make the conversion better or easier to use. I think your suggestion of listing items by room would make the conversion easier to use.

I've gone through and listed out the items in the encounter locations. In the process, I found more than a few I missed - mostly in the Random Encounters and the Gnome Vale. Those are now added and listed.

The Rug of Smothering is a monster in 5e rather than a magic item, but why can't it be both? So I wrote it up as a magic item also.

I also added custom stats for magic items I had previously substituted or ignored, including potions of dragon control, sweet water, and plant control; boots of dancing, crossbow of speed, Longtooth dagger, and wand of major image (formerly wand of illusion).

Somehow, and for the love of Gary I don't know how,...See more

Forgot one thing. I made formatting changes to the encounter entries which should make them a bit easier to read.

Stat blocks for the Dracolisk and Mobat have been added to the conversion. At some point I made them, then forgot to add them in. Mea culpa! Thanks to everyone who let me know about issues so I could correct them for you!

Hey Mark, I missed it last time, but i just checked out the latest update, and found that for Drelnza, there are only two legendary actions listed for her, when she should have 3.
Which (probably) is missing a XXX (costs 2 Actions) ??

Thanks for your hard work, i do like the changes you made in the update.

The missing third Legendary Action is supposed to be the standard vampire fang attack. I added it in and updated. Thanks for catching that and for the kind words!

The conversion appears to be missing the xeg-yi and xag-ya (from the end boss room). Would it be possible to update the conversion with these? It would be much appreciated, as I'm going to be doing this module soon with my group. Otherwise, fantastic conversion!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
