“Been There. Done That.”

Having lived a long life, you are now coming to the end of the journey. The final curtain call is near, but you are never too old to start the adventurer’s life. Hopefully you die a hero’s death, and not in your sleep.

I had a discussion with another D&D Player that I should make an old character to play.

"But what if he died in his sleep," I joked.

With this background, dying in your sleep is a real factor.

I envision this background being played in more of a one-shot setting, than a long-term campaign. I also view it as a more comical role-playing opportunity. In other words, I am having fun with it.

If you like the background; please like and share a quick review. Thank you.

As soon as I read the background title and description my first thought was of "Druss the Legend" from the David Gemmell books.

I feel like the "dying in your sleep" mechanic is more of a problem that you anticipate. Hard on the player, harder on the DM. A 5% chance at each long rest (and that's just assuming it's long rest based, you don't clarify if it's any time the character slumbers, like from a Sleep spell) that the campaign is thrown completely off track.
My opinion is if you're going to have age-based penalties it should be something less fatal. Maybe they don't regenerate spent hit die as quickly or something like that.

Michael, thank you for your response. I had a discussion much like this with one of my friends today. I see the background in a more of a comical sense, which I probably didn't convey in the published material. That risk, I find amusing. I see this background for more of a one-shot type character.

Yes, you are correct, the roll is after a long rest. I had that in my mind, and I can't believe I forgot to add that in to the text. Thank you for pointing it out. I have added that, and I am publishing the revised item shortly.

Thank you again for taking the time to read it.

Cheers,
Dave

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
