ADD TO WISHLIST >

Something strange is afoot within the Quivering Forest. So much so that even the elves of Greenhall have left their homes to seek out help from their newfound neighbors. But, their tales of a strange beast are not earning them any favors; especially among the Vistani, whom the elves suspect are to blame for their ills. Return once more to the Quivering Forest and learn the terrifying truth! Part Two of Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts.

A Two-Hour Adventure for 1st–4th level Characters

Also included in the purchase of this adventure is a version specially converted for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The converted adventure features all the text and maps from the original adventure along with cross-linking of monsters, spells, magic items, equipment, and story elements, plus the powerful rules automation for which Fantasy Grounds is known.

Takes longer than 2 hours, but I managed to finish this and 04-05 The Seer in about 5 hours total. Very challenging final encounter for a tier 1 group, but doable. Does a great job of introducing the theme of Barovia.

whats the deal with only putting the story boxes on? I found this real lame as I had to have the adventure printed out in front of me to read while running it. This one should really be updated to include the full info on the fantasy grounds info.

Agreed. Same issue. The conversion to fantasy grounds is not very good

This is a fantastic starting adventure with a strong amount of flexibility for the DM to use, not just with time management, but with pacing and combat as well. The adjustments to encounters for party strength seem to be right on point.

This is a really fun adventure with a good amount of exploration — perfect for a low level party to get a handle on some exploration mechanics.

Don't try to squish it into 2 hours, though — this is really a 3 hour module.

A good spin on a classic creature feature adventure, featuring a werewolf. I felt the random encounters were really well done and allowed the DM to actually make physical die rolls while playing online. A good amount of flavor in terms Ravenloft and seemed a bit overdone in parts. There is enough game mechanic with the blizzard to make it interesting as opposed to dull.

This module says that it is, "Part Two of Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts." Yet, I can't find a module titled "Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts," anywhere. What's the deal? :-s

Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts was the overarching title for the season 4 adventure league modules.

I will start off by saying it doesn't do this adventure in the two hours it recommends on the cover. It feels rushed and forced. That being said, we luckily had a 4 hour time slot. I really enjoyed this adventure and especially playing up the looming blizzard. My players also enjoyed that extra bit. Constantly trying to decide to push on, build a shelter etc. This is another adventure where the outdoor type characters can shine and are great tools for building up the storm with their wilderness knowledge. I highly recommend this one.

This adventure presents a fun, if only somewhat challenging, adventure for characters in the first adventure league tier of play. The adventure allows for your party to play through (or avoid) a number of interesting combat encounters, some of which can leave players bruised if they do not approach them with a clear head.

Further, subtle pointing to the cold and frigid effects of an approaching blizzard can lead to players feeling a chill they did not expect to. This part of the adventure was particularly entertaining for my players, most of whom neglected to purchase cold-weather gear, and myself. The adventure fortunately provides an avenue for players who neglect to make such a purchase to avoid death by exhaustion.

Some of the roleplay encounters in this adventure feel a little bit weak, though the addendum later published by WotC may provide some fixes to that.

My main gripe with this adventure lies in its final battle, which comes after the creature your players encounter...See more

Are Aya Glenmiir and the two elves of Greenhall wandering lost near Orasnou or do they still have access to their encampment in the Quivering Forest?

They are lost. The elf camp did not transition with them.

I enjoyed this. Easy to help use the creepy environment to throw unexpected combat without it seeming forced.

Thanks! I wanted to spotlight the domain of Barovia and the "tone" of Ravenloft for this adventure. In my mind, horror is most effective when it is ambient (the world/environment) as opposed to gore (combat, combat, combat).

The mod for FG for this doesn't make sense at all. I'm not sure if it was meant to be just a guide for the pdf. I bought it so that I won't have to print out the pdf and make things easier since everything would be on Fantasy Grounds. But this just doesn't help at all.

I was a player, haven't read the module yet.

Ratings:
-- Target Level: I think this module is 3rd or 4th level (I was warlock 1).
-- Story: 5/5.
-- Pacing: 5/5.
-- Combat Difficulty: 5/5. **This module is not level 1 PC friendly**. Way too many things can do 10+ damage in one turn.

Introduction: I loved the story of this module. Local trappers haven't been heard from and there is a storm coming, go save them.

Exploration: Decent amount. We got to do a little amateur Sherlocking.

Combat: Some rough combats. Situationally, this module could be an instant TPK. Very situationally, but it is possible. Depending on the count of magic weapons and spellcasters, maybe remove the Dire Wolf in the last fight (worse case, the PCs should have at least one magic weapon that can deal damage, two if they have a decent investigation/perception).

Roleplaying Opportunities: A little bit.

Overall: Great module. Being in Barovia...See more

So a weird thing happened during this adventure. I'm DMing my party (three level 1 clerics). They accepted the quest and ventured off into the wilds in search of (stuff). Their first obstacle was a river. Nothing special, just a cold river crossing on a cold winter day. Two fell in. That's when this story took a different turn. The weather was fast approaching and exhaustion began to set in. They got as far as the campsite. They got (stuff) and rolled poorly with interactions with (stuff). Since they were wet, cold and rolling disadvantages, they decided to take (stuff) back to town. They rest of the adventure was man vs nature as the harshness of Stahd's Winter bore down upon the hapless party. The exhaustion levels increased as they trekked through the blizzard without shelter or dry clothes. Hypothermia began to set in as they made a snow fort to wait out the storm. And they still had yet to cross back over the river. They did everything they could to stay alive, including scared flaming a party member to dry...See more

Y'know, my first Ravenloft adventure many years ago had the players crossing a gorge on a fallen log. It was a bit of boxed text, and only like 30 minutes into our game.

We spent two sessions on that log. They were convinced it was evil. ;)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
