Dusk Elves: A Ravenloft Subrace

ADD TO WISHLIST >

UPDATE: This free preview product now includes new rules as well as extensive background and roleplaying material, with three feats and a new Warlock Pact Option: The Pact of Gloom.

Dusk elves, as appearing in Curse of Strahd, are a mysterious race of elves living in Barovia and other worlds, such as the Forgotten Realms. Pull back the shroud of secrecy to play a dusk elf or add them to your campaign with this free preview of Ravenloft Archetypes: Nightmares of Barovia, including details and rules for perhaps the least known of all elven races, as well as their hidden history...

At the dawn of creation, no difference between the different kinds of elves existed, and no wickedness sundered the drow from their light-dwelling kin. When the war between what would become dark elves and the other elves began, some chose no side. They sought escape from the escalating violence and retreated to hidden parts of the mortal world. The nobles who led the sylvan armies against the dark host deemed those who fled traitors, and the most powerful of elven gods vowed vengeance against them for their cowardice. One goddess, however, sheltered those who abstained from the war as her chosen people, raising a veil to hide them from anyone seeking retribution...

This product is a free preview-- get more race options, along with new archeypes, monsters, spells, and more in Ravenloft Archetypes: Nightmares of Barovia:

I have purchased this and your Nightmares of Barovia in the past. However, I'm now able to redownload neither file. I'm able to redownload other files from other users, but not your own.

I love the background you made up for the Dusk Elves, but I was a bit disappointed to find very little character options for the character levels that are recommended for CoS... (1-10). I understand that the dusk elf resembles the wood elves, but small differences would have been welcome, like a +1 in DEX instead of WIS.

I think this is fantastic! Thanks to this product I've decided to play a Dusk Elf in our Storm King's Thunder Campaign. I do have some questions about the gloom pact though. How is it actually supposed to work in play? Off the top of my head I can't think of many spells that are cast as reactions, and then taking the Disengage action doesn't seem like it would do you any good because you're not moving on somebody else's turn. Am I missing something here?

This is intended for 5th Edition games, but the large quantity of story and setting material it contains makes it useful in any game set in the worlds of D&D, especially Ravenloft and the Forgotten Realms.

Were you able to get the PDF to work? After testing the download on a few different machines, I was still unable to replicate the problem.

Hi Jason R.-- Responding to the review that was posted, I hope I've made it clear that this is a free preview of another product. I also hope you don't feel cheated by only getting two pages of setting content for that price.

I like your work on their background, but the part about other elves seeking vengeance against those who remained neutral, isn't very well suited for the Realms IMO, as the history of the elves there is more nuanced than that. Lolth was banished long before the war between elves and drow, and that wasn't even a clear ''elves vs drow'' war, but a long series of conflicts started by the elves of the ancient empire of Aryvandaar, who tried to conquer the dark elven nation of Miyeritar (and that was before Lolth's faith even gained a real foothold, since the dark elves mostly worshiped the Seldarine, Eilistraee, Vhaeraun and Ghaunadaur).

There is a typo: ''Ellistraee'' should be ''Eilistraee''.

Hi Tommaso:
Thanks for catching that typo! I'll correct it in a feature update of the main Ravenloft Archetypes product. The history included is adapted directly from published WotC material from previous editions, and is meant to mesh with the history of elves presented in 5th Edition products, and to work for all D&D settings that have these varieties of elves, not just the Forgotten Realms. In broad terms, I think the description can still describe the Realms version in a general sense-- in real world history, a long succession of conflicts between the same groups is often referred to as a single war, such as the Hundred Years War between noble factions on Britain and the continent for rulership of France. And who's to say subtle influence by Lolth from exile didn't help ignite these conflicts?
The important element for dusk elf history is that there was a conflict between the elves of light and dark, and that the ancestors of the dusk elves chose to remain neutral and went into hiding. Any...See more

Yes, I see your point, and as I said, I think that you did a good job with the background. My only pet peeve was that the Crown Wars in the FR were more political than anything else. However, at the end of the day, the general concept is still valid in the Realms, since the most vehement elves--or worshipers of Shevarash (in the later eras)--might still accuse those who chose neutrality of cowardice, and perhaps even act against them.

I personally don't think that it was Lolth's influence to trigger the conflicts, because other gods (like Vhaeraun or Ghaunadaur) were much more influent than her at the time (a number of dark elves began to openly worship her only during the wars, and that was what led the Seldarine to curse the drow) and because the war was started by sun elves, for political reasons (although a fallen solar was influencing them).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
