5e Racial Handbook

In the world of the Forgotten Realms, there are a great number of races, of all shapes, sizes, and walks of life. Presented in the official Player's Handbook are but a few of the possibilities of race which a character might have. This supplement exists to help increase the number of options for player character creation, for stories and games involving more than just the most common, or nicest, of races.

Within, you will find new subraces for the Dwarf, Gnome, and Halfling, as well as a great many new race options. Some of these options include strange or normally evil races, who could be used either in an alternate setting, to tell a story of redemption, or to play out an evil campaign.

There are presently over 40 options available for players and DMs to choose from, including Catfolk, Half-Giants, Goblins, Kobolds, and much much more.

UPDATED State of the Product (April 29, 2019)

Thank you once more for all who supported, and especially those who paid for this product. After 3 years, the author is beginning to make changes to the races that are present in this book with a new Revised edition. This product will also be PWYW, so you do not have to worry about paying twice if you already gave money to support this once. Included in the Revised version will also be new races not included in this PDF. Please be patient while things are worked out.

Hello everyone. I am sorry for the very long silence. I had fallen out of favor with 5th Edition for quite some time, but I have been back for a while, and believe it is about time for this product to be updated. As not only do I find myself dissatisfied with some of these races, but obviously some have officially been published since this PDF's inception, I will be making a Revised edition as a separate product (also Pay What You Want, so you don't have to "pay twice" if you don't wish to). Please be patient, as this project is still in the works, but if you have ideas for races you would like to see, please let me know.

I am interested in several of the races you have included here, but I wonder if in future updates you might add the Dragonkin race, from 3.5. I found their various versions to be quite intriguing as an alternative to Dragonborn. Please consider adding them.

I love this! Thank you for putting this together. Don't get discouraged, I think it's a great tool. We sort of run a campaign that's parts Flash Gordon/ parts Mad Max, parts Jack Vance Dying Earth and the more strange unexpected stuff the better. Anyway, just dropping a solid thanks from another DM. :-)

Sorry for the late responses once more. I have made a note about the future of this product in the description, along with an apology. However, I have made this product free free to make up for my inaction. I don't want anyone to feel guilted by my words into paying any amount, or potentially misled (I can't edit the PDF at the current rate). The intention was never to really make money off of this anyways.

I would like to thank you all for your support and kind words, and I encourage you to use and alter these races as you see fit for your own products as long as it is credited or sufficiently altered. Obviously, most of them are not of my own creation even if I came up with their features for 5th edition.

Lesser Illithid feels a bit too strong. I feel Sunlight sensitivity would be a good balance for it.

A very good collection of races and subraces. I was wondering, however, if I would be able to use one of the races you created in a campaign that will be recorded and put up on youtube? An email with the answer to queenreeja@gmail.com would be most helpful.

Really enjoyed your product. I loved your 'authentic sourcebook' look. Can you tell me where you got your background template art from, it's awesome!

For those wondering what the holdup is, I have indeed been trying to write material for the races in my spare time. Problem is other projects coming in the way, and the fact that I have very little confidence as an actual writer. I am better (I think, anyways) at writing crunch, and I can come up with backstories and information, but writing it out extensively is not my strong suit.

Please know that I will still be trying to write out the material. I have gotten enough people purchasing the product to reach the goal I set for myself. Just know that it is taking me a lot of time.

Currently making a transition to the newest version of this product. Almost every race has been updated in some way, and some formatting issues have been fixed. As I write this, you may be waiting for the text file to be updated.

Going forward, I am going to be updating the races to include a more expansive lore. This is going to take a lot of time, so your patience is asked. I'm not sure yet if it will be posted as its own thing, or simply updated here. It would probably be too difficult to follow the updates as they will be sporadic and great in number.

I will be working on updating the features of races over this length of this week. If anyone has any specific problems they have with anything, now would be a great time to let me know.

Just wanted to say that I appreciate Carlton took the time to write a review for the product despite their very apparent dislike of it. Honest feedback is better than fake praise. I would like to posit a question asking them which races in particular they found balance issues with, however, and in which direction (overpowered, underpowered?)

I would also like to make two points based on their review:
1. The guidelines for making new races in the DMG practically do not exist. And if what they meant was the suggestions for NPC racial bonuses, those don't really fit with general PC guidelines, and also are very lackluster for PC options. I personally was greatly saddened by the fact that there are very little racial options that have been presented in 5th Edition beyond the PHB, as well. Even in the Monster Manual, which has always had race options, and with the DMG providing only 2 additional options to players, one of which is considered by many to be very lackluster.
2. If I were indeed...See more

Also, it would seem unfair to rate this product based on a lack of lore, considering both the product description, the preview, and the pdf itself tells you that there is not as much as normal. You can see for yourself in the preview just how much is given for each race. You should not judge a product based upon what it tells you it is not. I did spend a -lot- of time researching and writing just to fit in what there is, without directly copying from any sources, though.

Hello, the creator here. Please feel free to leave a comment or rating for this product. As it stands, I am allowing others to have this product for free, both due to a lack of expanded lore, and because a lot of this is untested. If you have any problems with the races as written, please let me know so I can come up with a solution. Also, if you have any suggestions for races to tackle next, that would be appreciated as well.

I personally enjoy having a large variety of races to choose from in my games, especially more exotic ones. I would expand the lore currently, but it is already a large task considering the number of races presented here, and I'm not even sure if there is enough demand from players. As it stands, a lot of the blanks can be filled in with the Monster Manual, or with your own story. If I get enough feedback asking for it, or enough sales on this product, I will do my best to increase the information for each individual race, as well as expand the list.

The product looks good, but I noticed a minor error in the lore.
Orogs aren't Orc/Ogre, those are Ogrillon. Orogs are an intelligent subrace of Orc.

I didn't even realize this before I researched it, myself, but Orogs are apparently the offspring of a male orc and female ogre, while an Ogrillon is the offspring of a female orc and male ogre. If this information truly is incorrect, then I will change it. This is where I had originally happened upon the information, though:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
