Classic Modules Today: B2 The Keep on the Borderlands 5e

ADD TO WISHLIST >

To use this conversion guide you will need a copy of "B2 The Keep on the Borderlands", originally available in hard-copy and now for sale in Digital format at DMsguild.com.

This "B2 The Keep on the Borderlands" conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules. Also included in this guide is a handy two-page reference sheet for encounters along with monster and magic item conversions, all on one two-sided sheet.

B2 The Keep on the Borderlands was included in the 1979–1982 editions of the Basic Set. It was written by Gary Gygax and illustrated with cover art by Jim Roslof and interior illustrations by Erol Otus. The module also provides rudimentary rules for wilderness adventures, as these were not included in the D&D Basic Set. The structure of the adventure as a series of separate caves allows segmented playing sessions for beginners. The module has been described as a low-level introductory scenario, which leads the player characters from an outpost on the frontier of law into the forces of chaos.

I'm surprised it hasn't been done yet. I'll review and if it is yet to be done I would be way down to do the conversion guide for it!

No problem. Thanks for picking up this product. This one and the others in my collection was my first attempts at writing stuff for gaming. I think it great 5e is getting so much play and at the same time there is an interest to play the older adventures which I played as a kid. I used this conversion at a game day at the local library a ways back. I didn't even have any 5e books but some of the players who showed up did. It worked great for me. Once again, thank you for your enthusiasm Charles.

First thing that should be said is this is for the printing of B2 the one where the Mad Hermit has a lion verses a panther.

Also this is not a direct conversion. This is more of a a where to find the creature on what page of Monster Manual. Also creative license has been taken as well. The Goblin Chieftain is suppose to have chainmail, shield and short sword. In this he just has a short sword. He does have a AC of 17 so between the 2 guides you could figure it out.

Another example is the Evil Priest gets an added Staff of the Python which is not in the original module. No mention of his Platemail +1 Shield +1 or Mace +1.

As stated you are going to need to original module to be able to correct everything and have the maps to run this.

It is worth mentioning again you will not get a room by room conversion. I expected Kobold Lair Room 6. 40 Kobolds CR 7 as original module. Change this to 10 Kobolds for CR 2. etc. You get nothing like that.

I purchased this product but cannot enter a review. At this price, this is a 1/2 finished product. It contains nicely formatted stat blocks for the major NPCs and enemies from the module, a reference to find best matches between B/X and 5E monsters, and rules for some of the unique traps and magical items found within the caves.

What it does not contain is any help for the 5E DM on converting encounters to match 5E challenge ratings. As written for B/X this is a deadly module and forces conservative play, but it would be doubly difficult with the power of 5E monsters. 5E adventuring paries had better have tons of hirelings or their running shoes on!

As it stands, if this was $1.99 I'd give it 4 stars, but for that price, a few pages of quick encounter conversions would be nice. 2 stars.

Kelly D, thanks for the feedback. I have been playing around with prices lately, so I will take your suggestion into consideration. I don't think I will go as low as 1.99 though.

As far as balance, OSR modules didn't concern themselves with balance. This is a feature, not a bug. Players need to circumvent more powerful opponents with creative game play.

The conversion module is extremely helpful, I was about to give up on using KotBL fro my new group.
My concern is that the stats for the veteran CR 1 in the conversion don't match the MM CR 3.
Am I missing something?
I am not completely versed with the DM or MM so I may be.

Is there a licensing reason why you can't simply release B2 with this integrated into it? Just curious. These conversion guides are great. I'm dying to play some of these old adventures.

Yes Andrew there is. This project was set up by Stan Shinn. He talked to Wizards of the Coast about doing these conversions of classic modules. WotC defined the parameters of the guide. They want you to purchase the PDF or POD of the old classic module.

Don't forget to post a review and let everyone know how great you think they are!

Version 3.00 has now been uploaded. It may take a few minutes before the file is ready, just make sure you are downloading version 3.00 for the latest guide.

This newly reformatted conversion guide improves on notable NPC stats as well as conversion notes for traps, magic, and magical items.

This conversion guide is currently undergoing a major overhaul. Since it was my first conversion guide I can find many ways to completely improve its usefulness. Look for 2.00 to be uploaded in the next couple of days.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
