Darker Gifts - Curse of Strahd Expansion

The current season of the D&D Adventurers League has just started, with the Death House introductory adventure.

My favorite feature of the season so far however was not the adventure - a great location-based crawl in its own right - but a nice little feature referred to in the Adventurers League Dungeon Master’s Guide as Dark Gifts.

As I started my own Curse of Strahd campaign with Death House I decided to adopt the dark gifts mechanic even it’s a home campaign and not part of the Adventurers League. But I wanted more, much more.

I came up with 16 extra dark gifts that players may acquire by being brought back to life by the mists. The first four however are not reproduced herein, so check out the Adventurers League Dungeon Master’s Guide for those.

Not terrible but wish you would have put the 1-4 darker gifts rather than stating see adventures league. What if I am using this for my own, not for AL? Now I got to hunt down that info and add it manually.

The AL material is referenced so as not to offer official content in an unofficial expansion.

Hello Igor.

Just wanted to let you know that you have a typo on the second page of the PDF where Expansion is spelled as Expension.

Haven't gotten far into the details yet, but looking forward to it!

So do you find your players stabbing themselves in the heart repeatedly in order to collect all 16 gifts? Or do they just do it for the free heal and spell slot reset?

In all due seriousness, this is a mechanic originated from the Adventurers League program, I merely expanded upon the options.

I followed some guidelines to create those after running the introductory adventure "Death House" twice:

* It is only available for players below level 5 (it means only up to level 4)
* Assuming the group starts with Death House, they only have a couple sessions at most, and it is not likely a player will die so much
* Assuming the group starts at level 3, even less chance of that happening

So, the idea is that a player will only get one (or two at most) dark gifts if he/she happens to die within the first 4 levels and opts not to create a new character.

The way the DM handles the "free respawn" is up to him or her. My players for example never even thought of exploiting it.

I love these though I have some ideas for a few more I'd like to see this be a full d100 table like the trinkets table

Vulnerability and aversion to silver but gain immunity to disease provided you aren't carrying silver (coins, silvered weapon, etc.)

gain a touch of etherealness having disadvantage on str checks to push open doors pull/hold rope etc. can choose once per long rest to gain immunity to any one non magical/silvered weapon attack. This ability does not negate magical damage from an effect example a paladin's smite damage.

Slimy skin, your skin develops a thick slippery mucous granting you advantage on rolls to prevent being grappled, however the slime has a pungent odor and creature have advantage on wis (perception) checks that involve smelling to detect you.

Your skin develops a warty texture and a greenish pallor you count as a Hag for casting coven spells and gain proficiency with alchemist's tools however you have disadvantage on cha (persuasion)...See more

Your eyes mouth and nose begin to glow with an Eerie fiery light as the skin on your face and neck changes to a vibrant shade of orange and your head swells to the size shape and texture of a jack o' lantern. You may separate your head from your shoulders as an action suffering no ill effect. your head shares the same hit points as your body and has a speed of 0. Wis (perception) involving taste smell hearing or sight may be made from your separated head you may also speak as normal through your head. However as long as you are affected by this dark gift you gain vulnerability to bludgeoning damage.

I have a few more ideas if you like. I'm full of inspiration.

You may spend a bonus action to cause sharp scopula to sprout from your hands and feet lasting for 10 minutes while the effect is active any you are not wearing boots or gloves your movement cannot be restricted by climbing or webbing however the tiny hairs are sharp and painful to use you take an ongoing 2 (1d4) slashing damage per round the effect is active

Sounds good I've got a couple ideas inspired by horror films and the horror genre. Like Dracula, wolf man, the creature from the black lagoon even "Nightmare before Christmas."

Your flesh is touched by decay as the blood coursing through your veins clots congeals and morphs into maggots and bugs, you gain immunity to bleed damage and do not count as a creature with blood however the maggots attempt to devour your flesh each time you finish a rest you must make a DC 10 constitution saving throw or have your maximum hit points reduced by 3 (1d6) you may repeat the saving throw after each rest regaining any previously lost hit points on a successful save. The DC for this check increases by an amount equal to the HP lost in this manner decreasing to 10 if all hit points are regained from a successful save

Webbing stretches between your fingers and toes, you gain a swim speed equal to your movement speed, the webbing encumbers your grip gain disadvantage on attack rolls related to dexterity.

what if we took the classic horror monsters and added all of thier traits on the table so it was possible to become a full pseudo version of said monster.

Wolfman, vampire, Frankenstein, creature from the black lagoon, scarecrow, zombie, the blob etc.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
