The jingle of gold and the chance to earn glory in the battlefield motivate many people to answer a call to arms. These men and women are mercenaries, willing to fight someone else's battle for the chance to earn a few coins or lasting fame.

Gold & Glory describes the mercenary companies of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. The famous and the infamous are detailed within: the Flaming Fist, possibly the most powerful private army on Toril; The Mindulgulph Mercenary Company, certainly the most bizarre; the honorable Bushido, the sly Masquerade, the snobbish Order of the Blue Boar, the hard-fighting She-Wolves, and many more. Many of the companies are brought to life in the full-page full color portraits in this sourcebook.

Gaming information, including statistics for BATTLESYSTEM(tm) Game scenarios, is offered as well. Player characters can adventure with these mercenary corps, earning gold and glory for themselves!

Product History

FR15: "Gold & Glory" (1992), by Tim Beach, is the fifteenth book in the "FR" series of sourcebooks for the Forgotten Realms. It was released in November 1992.

Continuing the "FR" Sourcebooks. Though most of the "FR" sourcebooks were geographic splatbooks, some of them instead went in different directions. "Gold & Glory" is one of those it lies somewhere between being a military history book and an organizational splatbook for mercenary companies. As such, it's the most like FR12: "Horde Campaign" (1991).

In comparison, "Horde Campaign" was definitely a military history book in the style of those published by Osprey Publishing (1969-Present). "Gold & Glory" also is light on D&D stats, is heavy on Battlesystem stats, and has several full-color pages of illustrations, but beyond that it doesn't have the same high quantity of illustrations and maps as its predecessor.

Not Exactly Maztica! Many Forgotten Realms fans have avoided "Gold & Glory", because its name and cover picture of a conquistador suggest that it's a Maztica book, tying in to the Maztica Campaign Set (1991) that TSR was pushing at the time. Three of the mercenary companies in "Gold & Glory" — the Flaming Fist, the Jaguar Guard, and the Golden Legion — do have ties to Maztica, but the general scope of the supplement is much larger than that: you'll also find references to the Horde Wars, Spelljammer, and more.

Expanding the Realms. Adventuring companies are as old as the Realms, so it was natural for TSR to publish a supplement that gives some small attention to these adventuring groups and also talks about the larger mercenaries companies that they can evolve into.

Many of the mercenaries companies described in "Gold & Glory" come from other sources. I14: Swords of the Iron Legion (1988) — a previous supplement that linked Battlesystem and the Realms — provided many of them. As already noted, the Golden Legion was also well-known, thanks to its appearance in almost half-a-dozen Maztica supplements and novels. However, the Flaming Fist would go on to probably become the best-known mercenary company in the Realms, thanks to its past connections to Maztica and its future appearances in Baldur's Gate (1998), and in Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad (1998).

"Gold & Glory" also provides lots of interesting details on the Realms, though you'll have to dig through all the individual company descriptions to find the little nuggets of information.

About the Creators. Beach was the coauthor of the Maztica Campaign Set and the "Fires of Zatal" (1991) adventure for Maztica. However, his work for TSR was rapidly expanding beyond that, with releases in 1992 covering Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Thunder Rift, and a few generic sourcebooks.

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
