Spiritualist - Arcane tradition

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This pdf introduces a new wizard tradition: The Spiritualist.

Spiritualists are wizards who specialize in contacting, commanding, and combating spirits, ghosts, and the incorporeal undead. They are able to use their abilities to learn secrets that only the dead know the answers to.

This also includes a printer-friendly version.

This is the fifth of several dark fantasy/Gothic horror archetypes that I've been working on for use with the upcoming Curse of Strahd/Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts storyline, but suitable for any campaign. More will be posted soon.

I welcome input and criticism. All thoughts are appreciated.

UPDATE 1.1: This pdf has grown from 2-6 pages. I've updated the seance ability, given the Spiritualist the ability to expend Hit Dice in order to temporarily infuse a melee weapon with their essence to gain the ghost touch ability, and given the Spiritualist the ability to turn ethereal at 14th level. I've also added several new pieces of equipment (automatic writing planchette, spirit bell, talking board, and spiritualist's pack), as well as 10 new spells focused on communicating with or battling spirits.

There seems to be a glitch in the files downloads for this product, as it's currently (2016 March 10th) showing three apparently identical zip files available (all with the same name and file size anyway). Maybe needs someone at OBS to resolve, as when I last downloaded the update, there were two identical zip file sets (I checked both just in case).

Thanks for the heads up! I believe the issue should be resolved now, and there should be only the newest version up. Any other feedback is always appreciated. It makes it easier to know if any changes need to be made, and I aim to make quality products.

In response to Andrew W's review "I recommend adding Advantage on saving throws against certain types of effects to Inured to Undeath. Possessions by ghosts or similar entities for example.

I recommend adding some sort of ability to touch or attack incorporeal creatures, to bolster the idea of the spiritualist's ability to interact with spirits.

," under the additional benefit of Ghost Sight, you gain advantage on INT, WIS, and CHA saves against attacks by undead. This gives you advantage on saves vs a ghost's Horrifying Visage and a ghost's Possession. I had thought to reword it so that it was specifically against saves vs incorporeal undead, but I can't seem to find any distinction in the 5th edition rules between corporeal and incorporeal undead. If there's a clear delineation in this edition that I'm missing, I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone can tell me where it is, because I've yet to even see "incorporeal undead" as an undead subtype in 5th edition.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
