Selected Option:

Before the War of the Lance, Flint Fireforge returned to his place of birth, the dwarven town of Hillhome. There, he uncovered a fiendish plot and used his magical battle axe to stop evil dwarves from destroying his home. The axe was destroyed in Flint's final battle with the leader of the evil forces.

Or was it?

Now, rumors are circulating that Flint's axe has been seen around Hillhome. It is up to the player characters to solve the mystery and find the legendary battle axe of one of the Heroes of the Lance.

This adventure, for characters of level 2-4, serves to introduce players and dungeon masters alike to the world of Krynn. Pregenerated player characters are included, so preparation time can be reduced.

Magic, monsters, and mystery await all who accept the quest for one of the legendary items of the world of Krynn!

Product History

DLQ2: "Flint's Axe" (1992), by Tim Beach, is the second Dragonlance Quest. It was published in September 1992.

Origins (I): Another Tale, Another Quest. DLQ2: "Flint's Axe" (1992) follows after DLQ1: "Knight's Sword" (1992). It's another adventure intended for introductory GMs that's focused on a MacGuffin quest for a magic weapon associated with one of the Heroes of the Lance.

Tim Beach and "Sword" author Colin McComb talked about creating a closer connection between the two adventures and ultimately decided simply to share three of the pregenerated characters: fighter Erastin Rivenguard, thief Galenye Faelern, and fighter Karathos the minotaur. Erastin and Galenye have each gained a level for this second appearance. All three would gain one more level when they appeared for a third time in DLR3: "Unsung Heroes" (1993).

Origins (II): A Newcomer to Dragonlance. Tim Beach was a contrast to his "DLQ" partner, Colin McComb. Whereas McComb was a long-time fan of Dragonlance, Beach had never read the original novels or played in the adventures — though he did "lift" bits and pieces of the latter for his own campaign. When Beach did get into Dragonlance, it was through Time of the Dragon (1989), which means that "Flint's Axe" was his first major experience with the continent of Ansalon.

Origins (III): About a Novel. Beach's primary reference for "Flint's Axe" was Flint the King (1990), a novel by Mary Kirchoff and Douglas Niles that was the fifth of the Preludes (1989-1990), telling the stories of the Heroes of the Lance before the Dragonlance Chronicles (1984-1985). It's about Flint's return to his home of Hillhome, c. 346-349 AC, just a few years before the Chronicles.

Origins (IV): About an Axe. Beach's adventures specs required that "Flint's Axe" be about the quest for the axe used in Flint the King. The problem was that it had been destroyed!

So Beach researched the topic more, and ultimately said that "there was a little confusion about which axe was supposed to be the adventure's base — so, after some research, I decided all the candidates were actually the same axe". So Flint's Axe is the Tharkan Axe from Flint the King and the Axe of Brotherhood from War of the Twins (1986) and Dragonlance Adventures (1987). (And due to the events of Flint the King, it's indeed useless as a weapon now.)

Origins (V): The End of the Quests. The "DLQ" adventures were planned as a trilogy, with the third one being "Huma's Shield". There were some vague discussions of once more carrying pregenerated characters into the new adventure, but it was never written. Beach reports that "TSR management decided the new stuff wasn't really making money, and the way to go was to repackage the 'classic' material." This is probably what led TSR back to their "DLC" Dragonlance Classics reprint project. Volume I (1990) had appeared years earlier. Now, Volume II (1993) would be TSR's next Dragonlance project, following "Flint's Axe", and the final Volume III (1994) would follow a year later, as the final Dragonlance publication of the third wave of production.

Adventure Tropes. Much like "Knight's Sword" before it, "Flint's Axe" is a surprisingly mature adventure for something intended for novice GMs. Certainly, it's a MacGuffin quest, but much of the adventure focuses on investigation (leading inevitably to a few delves). Because of the amount of background information in the module, this adventure is actually quite short as well.

Exploring Krynn. "Flint's Axe" provides extensive details on Hillhome and the dwarf society there. Once again, the time period is before the official one for Tales of the Lance (1992). Dragon #224 (December 1995) suggests 365 AC.

NPCs of Note. This story is of course all about the late Flint Fireforge, Hero of the Lance. His family also is quite prominent. Brother Tybalt, brother Jeth, and nephew Basalt are all NPCs, while niece Obsidian is a pregenerated character.

About the Creators. Beach, the monster guy for Maztica, was now doing his first and only work for Dragonlance. It was one of a full half-dozen books he worked on for TSR that year.

Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

I purchased and printed Flint's Axe and Knight's Sword at the same time and I have to say unless you're a huge fan of the dwarves of Krynn give this one a pass, Knight's Sword is objectively a much better adventure. THE GOOD Again this is one of [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
