Journey Through the Center of the Underdark

"What particularly struck me is how well-written they are. The text is a delight to read. The descriptive text is evocative, and the DM notes don’t ramble. I really wish more adventures I read were as good as this one." - Merric B

About the Author

Tony has been a gamer for two centuries and counting. He was hooked the moment he set foot in Quasqueton while In Search of the Unknown.

He started DMing last millennium at the beginning of a magical age known as the 80's and has been challenging players ever since. To his astonishment and great pleasure several players have been with him since he first got behind the DM screen.

Tony's going to stop talking about himself in third person now, cuz – its weird.

I sure hope you enjoy this batch of adventures... my group got a solid 10 hours of fun out of them.  Let me know what you think, share some war stories in the comments, and I'll have more for you soon!

Just curious, how high up could these encounter's levels be raised?

Great work. I modified the Shambling Mud slightly. As it is bubbling hot spring, I changed it's damage to a mixture of heat and bludgeoning.

I've used many of these as filler encounters while traveling. About to drop the Wicked Garden in and even though I have read it many times, I only just figured out the names of the dead NPC's she cries out. Truly funny.

I know you posted this over three years ago, but any chance you drew up any maps on Roll20 for the Wicked Garden?

Hey Anthony, thanks for the interest. Not exactly - I recently got the opportunity to revisit Annarei's Garden as it might be after Out of the Abyss in Jeff C Steven's Encounters in the Savage Underdark, and great looking full color cartography was commissioned for it - you can check that out here:

I ran most of the encounters in this product for my 5th level PCs. I used it to level them up after they left Blingdenstone and were travelling to the surface. I ran all of the encounters but the final one (which I will run next weekend). They were all quite fun and varied and each provided its own unique feel and sense of fun.

I did notice a few more issues I wanted to bring up:

1) Page 4 - With regard to the 20-foot section of the chasm wall that requires a check to navigate, if the PCs decide to climb at full speed, why do they have to make Dex saves? It seems to me that saves are more appropriate for effects that are external to the PCs and come suddenly at them. In other words, saves are reactions. The PCs should have to make Strength (Athletics) checks to climb at full speed. I suggest a DC 10 Strength (Athletics) check to negotiate the "normal" portions of the chasm wall at full speed.

2) Page 4 - A fall of 80 feet does 28 (8d6) damage, not 24 (8d6) damage...See more

Nice work! I will use it for my OOTA campaign to spice things up and give the PCs needed XP to get to the proper level.

I did notice a few errors, and as a designer of DMs Guild scenarios myself I know I appreciate these being pointed out to me:

1) Page 13 - Zeks and Edsel. You reference Appendix B for their stats. But the stats are in Appendix A.

2) Page 14 - "Graz'zt' enemy" should be "Graz'zt's enemy"

3) Page 14 - Gift of Graz'zit is Appendix B not Appendix A

4) Various - your capitalization of races is intermittent. For example, on page 14 you capitalize Drow but do not capitalize svirfneblin or orcs or drow or ogre elsewhere.

5) Page 15 - change Wight's to Wights.

6) Page 16 - capitalize Zombie and unbold Wight (you already bolded it previously).

7) Page 16 - change Wight's to Wights.

8) Page 17 - Capitalize mummy.

9) Page 20 - Gift of Graz'zt. Is the intent...See more

Wow good catches Devin... especially the summon duration! I certainly had effects as the conjure spells in mind but I missed the specific enumeration. Fixed Thanks!

BTW what Guild adventures are yours?

Would this be something I could run as its own adventure without modifying it or is it solely for random encounters inside of a different campaign?

Pardon my slow reaction time. No need for Out of the Abyss... with very little to no flavor modification any of these encounters could easily be inserted into any Underdark setting. If your party is traveling underground from point A to point B you can insert any of these to spice things up.

What system/version is this for? I wish the creators would start specifying somehow on the cover what version all these adventures are for, or if they are made to be version agnostic.

Setting would be nice on the cover as well but at least it's mentioned.

Thank you! I am running the campaign and our third session is just around the corner. This saved me the trouble of prepaing anything in case the players steer of the tracks. The first two encounters alone can save my next session.

Just picked up a copy for use in a homebrew campaign set in the Underdark. I'm looking forward to inserting some of these encounters into the storyline. Will leave a review soon. Keep up the good work!

I can't believe this is just a dollar. You get a whole bunch of cool filler encounters that are perfect for out of the abyss, but would work well in any underdark adventure. For a dollar. I think candy bars cost more than that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
