Please critique and comment!  I want to update this pdf with the best ideas possible.

This product contains a set of rules and information for a new player race; the treant.

Personally I've always loved the concept of living trees, making almost any iteration of them a personal favorite of mine no matter the setting.  However, as a player it would be unrealistic and difficult to run around as a 20-foot tall plant.  As such, a player who chooses this racial option is a freshly-awoken treant, still small (by tree standards) at a goliath-like 8 feet.

Treants make particularly good barbarians, fighters, and nature-based clerics and paladins owing to their resilience and strength.  A treant druid is also an interesting and amusing concept; the beast forms it takes could be topiaries and wood-form animals.

This is definitely a player race that requires some ingenuity and creativity from players and DMs alike.

Changelog

Version 3.0 01Jan2019

Overall

  • The document has been updated with a new cover image, as with the rest of our products.
  • A few minor text fixes have been made throughout the document, mostly fixing spelling errors.

Version 2.0 13Nov2017

Overall

  • With the release of Xanathar’s, the PDF has been updated with a treant racial feat.  Now you can be the massive powerhouse tree you've always wanted to be, increasing your size category to Large (you and your DM are responsible for figuring out how the hell you get around) and thus increasing your feats of Strength, and making your unarmed blows more powerful as a result.  Pole, btw, is the term used to describe a tree that's older than a sapling, but not as old as an adult.
Broadleaf
  • Removed the 1d8 + Str unarmed strike damage from the Broadleaf; this was never meant to be included in version 1.2, and is a hold-over while redesigning some of the race's traits.  The increased unarmed strike damage made the Broadleaf Treant mechanically superior from the Evergreen, which I wanted to avoid.  Just having extra HP per level already put it on equal ground with the Evergreen.

Version 1.2 26Oct2017

Overall

  • Remade the PDF in Homebrewery.  Looks a bit nicer and infinitely easier to edit now.

Base Race Traits

  • Race has undergone a pretty major overhaul to balance it a bit, including moving around certain traits and renaming others.  Treants are, unfortunately, a relatively complicated race to design, requiring more than a normal race's features to be properly represented.  I do feel that the race is fair and balanced, perhaps a bit stronger but not inherently broken (in the same way that variant humans, for example, are a stronger race option than others).
  • Inspired by the Tortle race, changed their AC.  Treants now cannot wear armor (as makes sense; they are trees, for crying out loud), but get a natural AC of 14 + Dex OR Con, whatever is higher.
  • Gave the treant an unarmed strike of 1d6 + Str, since (let's be honest) you aren't likely to see many treants carrying around swords or axes (though you still have that option).
  • Plant Metabolism, renamed to Treeish for a little Tolkien easter egg, streamlines the problem of treants eating and sleeping.  More Warforged-like, still requiring a specific kind of activity to actually facilitate a long rest, but the requirements for things like sunlight are made less complicated; more than likely you aren't going to run into the issue of your treant starving to death unless you are running around in the Underdark for two weeks, at which point the lack of sunlight will finally get to you.  Water requirements have also been made less restrictive.  Fire vulnerability was wrapped up into this trait, and the trait also goes into details that treants are obviously not humanoid.
  • Rather than the progressive spells that the treant originally got, now it can just communicate with plants (much like gnomes can communicate with small animals).  Easier to deal with.

Broad-Leaf

  • Changed the +2 Con to +1 to balance the class better, especially since AC operates more strongly off Con now.
  • Removed the advantage on Con saves; the subrace was far ahead of the Evergreen subrace in terms of balance.  I think the +1 to Con, AND the +1 HP per level, AND the advantage on Con saves was all just too much wrapped into Con and making the subrace too effective in Con-like attributes.  +1 Con already gives it a better Con save than the Evergreen in most cases.

Evergreen

  • Changed the +2 Dex to +1 to balance the class better, especially since AC operates more strongly off Dex now.
  • Changed their base speed from 35 ft to 40 ft; this was needed to bring it up to par with the Broad-Leaf (even after removing the Broad-Leaf's second trait) and makes the subrace a bit more desireable.

Version 1.1

Overall

  • Altered some of the wording in the Plant Metabolism feature, as well as included more realistic rules on suffocation (plants need air, too!)

Really digging this, sir. Working on a battle-royal one shot that this would be an amazing option for. From a style standpoint, it's absolutely gorgeous and easy to read through, which is a huge help as well. I'm hoping the Sharkfolk looks just as good. As for a third option, maybe something tropical? Or a fruit tree would be interesting...i could see an apple-Treant being maybe a cleric or a druid, rather than a martial class (which is what this is clearly aiming at). Just a thought. :)

I'm definitely not saying no to a potential third subrace; I just want to have a good option for it. Once you have broad-leaf trees and coniferous trees, those two categories really cover all tree species, and I think does a good job of providing proper variety in a treant.

The only other tree type I could think of would be something like a tropical tree; technically those would still fall under broad-leaf, since most tropical trees are likely to be fruit-bearing with, well, broad leaves, but I could see making a distinction for the purposes of a fantasy setting.

Bamboo. It would be a natural battle-priest type class with insane natural armor. Since Bamboo is as strong as steel length wise, I would give it some sort of ahndicap there, like a strength bonus for lifting and throwing, but it could injure itself if it has to try to dodge sideways, or takes blunt damage from the side.

Note: I haven't looked at your idea yet.. but I'm about to. I'm imagining a race with a speed handicap in combat, but they can wield weapons with absolutely explosive damage, like using a boulder as a club, or a ballista as a hand held crossbow.

Also!! Bamboo is very fast growing, so you could perhaps start out the sapling at a smaller size. I'm thinking about some magical size shifting ability, but I'm not really feeling it in my head.

It's an interesting idea for sure! But I probably wouldn't use bamboo as a template; it's not a tree for one, and the different traits you suggest end up being pretty complicated for 5th edition. A third subrace in my mind needs to have good flavor to support it and rules that make it distinct without being overbearing.

I do believe you guys did contact me! I thought I had responded but it's entirely possible that I confused myself. I think he was playing a treant Barbarian, right?

I go into this a bit in the description, but I believe Barbarian would combo *best;* though there's some overlap with the different ways to calculate AC (and you can only pick one), the bonuses to Dex/Con and Str would be valuable.

Hello Jeff, I had a question regarding the image of the Treant on the card. Did you create that image yourself or did you find it somewhere else? I'm referring specifically to the tree-man and not the card itself. And if you did find it elsewhere, could you tell me where you got it? Many thanks!

Just Google "treant" and it's one of the first images. It's just the art from the 4e Monster Manual for treants. I just removed the man that he's holding in Photoshop.

Aesthetically I love how you set this up, it looks straight out of the players handbook. However I have some changes regarding the mechanics and would love to talk to you through email about this and any other races and ideas you have, and i could share some of mine

I started a review for this product, but decided against it, because I'd have to rate it down strongly, as I don't feel the Treant will work well as a player-race in most D&D games; certainly not in mine. The information and its presentation here is very nicely done though, and the details will help enhance the monster when used as an important NPC. So for content, I'd be happy to go with four stars (it would have needed rather more information on different Treant types to rate five stars). However, because it's marketed purely as a player-race, I'd have to rate it at just two stars, as for me, it simply doesn't work that way. It seemed unfair to brand the product so poorly, when I rather liked it, but not in the way it was meant!

I completely understand your meaning; treants aren't a race you'd see a lot of people playing. However, I think in certain games and with certain groups they would be well received. I, for one, am not really a fan of aarakocra or devas all that much. But at the same time I don't fault anyone for wanting to play one. I appreciate your feedback, though. Different treant types are something I've been considering, though I was concerned about overloading the race with too many possible options that cover too many angles. Still I may come back to it at a later point.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
