The Wanderer's Chronicle

Beyond the Scorched Plateau, across the Burning Plains, in the shadow of the Thunder Mountains, the largest body of water beneath the crimson sun sparkles like a desert mirage. But the place is real, for I have seen it. I felt the cool spray on my skin, tasted the salt mist on my lips. It is the Last Sea, a remnant of a long-lost age hidden far to the north of Tyr

--From The Wanderer's Journal?

The Last Sea, a huge body of cool water, remains locked in time, a manifestation of the Green Age that survives to the current Athasian era. Here, people live in safety and peace - as long as they follow the laws set forth by the ancient, immortal Mind Lords who rule over them.

Mind Lords of the Last Sea details the environs and societies living in a hidden valley hundreds of miles north of the Tyr Region. On the shores of the largest known body of water on Athas, the ancient city of Saragar rises like a temple to the Green Age, and the Triune Mind Lords hold sway over all with their powerful psionic abilities.

This accessory is the second in a series of "Wanderer's Chronicles" that explores the new areas of Athas. It features:

  • A 96-page sourcebook that details the hidden valley, the Last Sea, and all the creatures and intelligent races that inhabit the region - as well as a comprehensive look at the Mind Lords and their great city, Saragar. This sourcebook also includes new monsters, new rules, and new equipment specific to this new region.
  • A 32-page adventure book that provides a ready-to-play adventure set in Saragar and around the Last Sea.
  • A full-color map of the Last Sea region, complete with plenty of exciting new locations to explore.

By the Last Sea, the danger is all in your mind?

Product History

Mind Lords of the Last Sea (1996), by Matt Forbeck, is the second book in the Wanderer's Chronicle series for Revised Dark Sun. It was released in January 1996.

Origins. Mind Lords was written in a cabin without electricity in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Forbeck had to bring his laptop to a neighbor's cabin every night to charge up on power. As thanks, Forbeck named some things in the book (such as the towns of Huddleston and Shallat) after family friends in the area.

Forbeck remembers having a pretty free hand when he was freelancing Mind Lords. He put in some "wacky" material and expected to get requests for revision … but TSR kept his work largely intact.

Continuing the Dark Sun Series. In 1995, TSR released Dark Sun Campaign Setting Expanded and Revised (1995), a new boxed set that advanced the timeline of Athas past the Prism Pentad novel series (1991-1993).

Following the publication of this Revised edition of the setting, TSR began to dramatically expand the world of Athas, which previously had been constrained to the Tyr region. This was primarily done through a series of boxes named "The Wanderer's Chronicle". The first of them was Windriders of the Jagged Cliffs (1995); Mind Lords of the Last Sea was the second and last.

Love It or Hate It? Mind Lords is certainly the most controversial book in the Dark Sun line, primarily because it went against many of the themes of the setting. It's set around a huge lake in a mostly desert landscape; it has a seemingly happy populace in a previously ruthless environment; and it features joyful skills like surfing and sailboarding in a normally joyless world. Some people say that Mind Lords is where Dark Sun jumped the shark.

On the flip side, Mind Lords presents an unusual setting that could be straight out of a science-fiction novel. Despite appearing to be a utopia, the world of the Last Sea is a dictatorship where happiness is mandatory. Beyond that, the supplement generally expands both Dark Sun and D&D in some creative directions.

As with many off-kilter ideas, the success of Mind Lords of the Last Sea depends on how a GM presents it.

Expanding Athas. Mind Lords represents a massive expansion of Athas thanks to its detailing of new lands to the north. It focuses on the Last Sea, the city of Saragar, and nearby realms like the Burning Plains and the Thunder Mountains. Before the Expanded and Revised edition of Dark Sun, this type of geographical expansion was entirely unknown for the Athas setting.

Monsters of Note. Mind Lords includes stats for several creatures of the region, many of them maritime, including dolphins. And sharks.

Future History. The phrase "Mind Lords" was used again in Dark Sun Campaign Setting (2010), but this time to refer to members of the Order, not the rulers of the Last Sea region.

About the Creators. Forbeck freelanced extensively in the RPG industry starting in the early '90s. In 1996, he wrote both Mind Lords of the Last Sea and DMGR8: Sages & Specialists (1996) for TSR. They were his only major works for the company.

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. Thanks to Robert Adducci for Dark Sun advice. Please feel free to mail corrections, comments, and additions to shannon.appelcline@gmail.com.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

what can I say about the setting without spoiling too much? this would be a good place to finish off a long campaign for Dark Sun. As the title does say though you might want to have a few Psionicists in the party. besides this this is going to [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
