Bard - College of Hymns

While clerics channel divine power and paladins go on holy quests, bards in the College of Hymns perform the songs and stories created by the followers of their gods. This class is great support for cleric and paladins, and a decent replacment if your party is lacking. This is an idea derived from the Lightbringer substitution level for bards in Expedition to Castle Ravenloft for 3.5e. Please let me know what you think and if anything needs rebalanced!

This is pretty good but I feel like it's lacking a little in inspiration. Also, the evil options may be more powerful than the good options which I feel like is against the spirit of the class.

I definitely like that the Song of Rest gets improved by picking this Archetype though.

Do you think that using Divine Inspiration to either grant resistance to radiant/necrotic damage or adding the inspiration die to damage rolls as radiant damage would be a decent substitute? As it's written right now, its intended to make Turn Undead more powerful at low levels, as well as the other Channel divinity features granted by clerics and paladins. Thoughts?

Consider that this bard is completely neutered in situations where there isn't a Cleric or Paladin with the Channel Divinity feature. Access to the cantrips and later the spells is good, the improved Song of Rest is great as well.

Being able to fuel a single class feature that doesn't even belong to your class is the definition of "situational at best". It would be more interesting to give the College of Hymn's Bard his own Channel Divinity. Something completely unique.

Also the strength of the spells that the Bard is gaining access to is insanely high. Paladins don't even get access to spells that powerful.

Its doable, but making a Channel Divinity feature powered by Bardic Inspiration is going to be a bit tricky. Make it too powerful and it'll get abused. Make it too weak and no one will use it later on at higher levels. Maybe granting the target temporary hit points. As for the high level spells at at 14th level, clerics and bards both have full spell progression, so the thought behind it was that it wouldn't be too over powered, but I can see that now. Maybe just limit it to a 6th and 7th level spell. And for the Evil College of Hymns, Innvocations didn't seem to powerful, but when you made me realize that a bard with at-will spells is a little OP, perphaps let give them a spell list of "evil" spells that they can choose from? Not too sure about that one. Thank you for the feed back!

I like the changes you've made in Version 2; especially that you looked to other source books for inspiration. Heaven's Trumpet and Dread Word look like decent abilities.

The only thing I would say is that you've taken a bit too much away without adding enough. An archetype usually has 4-5 features, most of which aren't just spells from other classes. I'd say maybe add at least one more feature for both the Good and Evil versions that is something unique that improves an existing base bard ability.

I have a thought on it, being able to make a Ranged Weapon Attack with your Bard Instrument that does Radiant damage if you are Good and Necrotic damage if you are evil; adjusting the numbers however you see fit.

This would allow the bard to be able to focus on just using his instrument; rather than having to rely on typical martial weapons.

Nice, I really like the Variant in v3. It gives you an option if there is no cleric or paladin in your party, and helps supplement the healing that would be lacking in that case. It's also got a lot more flavour than simply adding a cleric spell.

Good job

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
