DSM3 Marauders of Nibenay (2e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

When the brides of death become the marauders of Nivenay, When the dead must die and the unsleeping must wake, Then the Dragon shall be born anew.

For centuries the Veiled Alliance has been a thorn in the side of the mighty sorcerer-king Nivenay. Now the stars are right and the mysterious Shadow King has decided to rid himself of his unremitting rivals. But the Veiled Alliance is not easily defeated. They too have been watching the stars, and they know that the history of the great city has reached a crucial juncture. Both sides stand ready for a great battle, but neither is prepared for the disaster that looms over them. By the time the sun rises again, the city will be in ruins and the task of rebuilding it will fall squarely on the shoulders of a small band of adventurers. The future is theirs to decide, for good or evil.

Product History

DSM3: "Marauders of Nibenay" (1993), by William W. Connors, is the eight Dark Sun adventure and the third in the "DSM" series of "Dark Sun Missions". It was released in August 1993.

Continuing the Dark Sun Series. "Marauders of Nibenay" was the final "DSM" adventure and also the final adventure in Dark Sun's unique flip-book style — ending one of the most innovative periods ever for D&D adventures. Like its predecessors it includes a GM book, which contains the adventure, and a player book, which has lots of pictures for the players (and also details the city of Nibenay). The package also includes a short story: "Equinox", also by William W. Connors.

The links through the "DSM" series were almost nonexistent, with the three adventures mainly lining up by level and locale. These light connection would lead into Dark Sun's second and final "Epic" adventure, DSE2: Black Spine (1994).

Adventuring Tropes. Like the other flipbook modules, this one is a carefully organized episodic adventure with the players moving from one encounter to another. It ends with a conflict between two major NPCs, which was a bit of trope in the days of story-heavy adventures. With that said, the module contains a fair amount of exploration too, as the players move into Naggaramakam and the Inner Citadel of Nibenay.

Expanding Athas. "Marauders of Nibenay" is a nice expansion of two previous supplements set in the area: DSQ3: "Asticlian Gambit" (1992) and The Ivory Triangle (1993). As "Marauders of Nibenay" is set entirely in the eponymous city, it adds considerable detail to the earlier descriptions of the area, particularly in its chapters detailing the inner Sanctum of the city and its sorcerer-king.

"Marauders of Nibenay" also focuses somewhat on the Veiled Alliance of that city, building on information from DSR3: "Veiled Alliance" (1992).

Combining "Asticlian Gambit", "Marauders of Nibenay", "Veiled Alliance", and The Ivory Triangle creates a pretty nice setting for adventure in Athas centered on the cities of Gulg and Nibenay; it's a pity that two of them are in different adventure "series".

Oops! Though twenty locations are (briefly) described in the Naggaramakam, the map curiously doesn't show where they are. GMs will have to decide on placement on their own.

About the Creators. This was Connors only writing for the Dark Sun line. That same year, he wrote "Rage of the Rakasha" (1993) for Basic D&D and MC15: "Monstrous Compendium Ravenloft Appendix II: Children of the Night" (1993) — one of many Monstrous Compendiums that he worked on.

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
