We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Will there be a Print on Demand Option, like there is for the Rules Cyclopedia, for this piece of Warm Boyhood Nostalgia one day?

This version of the Basic series is colloquially known as the Denning Basic set (Well... as far as I am aware that's what they're referred to) due to the main editor being a Troy Denning. Though truthfully it's pretty much the Mentzer series with a little touch up.

This version of basic is the 1994 TSR #1106 boxed set and is the final iteration of the basic series and where as the 1991 boxed set has the same information, TSR decided to put the ungainly dragon cards information into the book itself.

Zanzers dungoun, which was the starter adventure for the black box (1991s New Easy to master Dungeouns and Dragons) and this set is pretty lackluster, but functional for a teaching adventure.

Unlike previous iterations, this "basic" book covers levels 1-5 instead of levels 1-3 and then it's supposed go go into the Rules Cyclopedia (which I would recommend to the end of time)

Also, unlike the Mentzer sets, or the Rules cyclopedia, this also has rules for...See more

I should also add, the "New easy to master Dungeons and Dragons" rule set is the exact same as the "Classic Dungeons and Dragons" rule set.

If we go even deeper, the "New Easy to master Dungeons and Dragons" set is pretty much the Mentzer series....

This version of Basic is also the intended start point for transition to the Rules Cyclopedia (TSR1071).
Essentially, the editions of basic are
Holmes
Moldvay Basic & Cook Expert (1981/1982)
Mentzer Basic/Expert/Companion/Master/Immortals
Denning/Alston/Alston Basic/Cyclopedia/Wrath of the Immortals. The basis is also "Big Black Box" or "Big Black Basic"

Holmes doesn't mesh with the others; it's an orphaned edition. The others are not even whole edition numbers, more like Holmes = 0.5, BX =1, BECMI = 1.1, BBB/Cyclopedia = 1.2

This really needs one of Shannon's histories, if nothing else to explain how it fits in the Basic line.

The book itself here is the text from the black box starter set (1070, the one with “learning cards” instead of a book). I have to assume it was costing them too much to produce as a starter set, so they reformatted the same content into a 128 pg paperback. (I own both in their original print form.)

This product was actually a revision of the "New Easy to Master Dungeons & Dragons Game" black box - ironically, the Dragon Cards folio in the black box didn't make exactly make it easy to dungeon master. The "Classic Dungeons & Dragons Game" boxed set was a reformatting of the earlier black box, with a lot of the information from the Dragon Cards folio integrated into the new rulebook. It should be noted that the current PDF is missing some of the standup counters, and the fold-out map of Zanzer's Dungeon - submitting a report so hopefully they'll provide an updated file soon enough. Otherwise, the scan is great.

I learned on the Big Black Box. It's a piece of my childhood I aim to track back down one of these days. Alas, it is, understandably, difficult to find one with the original dice and Player minis still there.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
