Paladin Variants

These paladins revere their patrons within the ambiguities of their spheres of influence & dogma, and are typically some form of good or flavor of neutral in alignment. These are not intended to be Oathbreakers or Anti-Paladins. With the absence of racial and alignment restrictions in 5th edition, I wanted to explore what would represent paladins who worship outside of the standard Lawful Good Crusader stereotype you normally encounter. I welcome any and all feedback. I made efforts to maintain balance, promote uniqueness, and minimize overlap wherever possible.

These are Forgotten Realms based variants and include archetypes for paladins who worship the following gods: Auril, Bane, Beshabba, Hoar, Leira, Myrkul, Shar, Talona, Talos, & Tempus.

Bought this but cant review it for some reason. Very good product. Only thing. Level 3 ability of Oath of Tempest is a bit broken for a level 3. Shockwave earthquakes and preventing spell casting seem like a level 14 ability not a level 3. I would alter this to make your next melee attack have the chance known your enemy prone, or allow your smite damage to deal a bit more thunder damage.

This was my first stab at creating class options, so definitely some OP stuff made it in as I was learning. These are due for some rewrites though as a result of playtesting and those are great ideas. I made a note, and will be including that in any changes. Thanks!

Talona and Talos? - Must be a typo instead of Tempus - was actually hoping for Tempus... Unless it is in the making? Im going to play a Tempus Vengeance Paladin soon, so was curious what Tempus would be like .... Let m eknow if this is the case, thanks

Had not originally planned to include Tempus, figured his followers could be well served by Oath of Devotion, or probably Oath of the Crown from Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. Personally don't see Oath of Vengeance fitting well with Tempus, based on his description he doesn't seem the type to hold a grudge or carry baggage like that. But it takes all kinds, anything is possible. There could be room for something like a Oath of Battle or Oath of War without too much overlap with others. I could look into it.

Thanks! Yes it is touch and go for a Paladin to start with, IMO Tempus is a very open Dogma for Paladin though there are clashes which need a it of "Play of words", One can add Devotion or Vengeance (Assuming those are the only options). Paladins are generally leaders, therefore Leaders of wars into Battle in this case. Tempus alignment being N in 5e allows the Vengeance preferred alignments of N or LN, though a killing machine which is what they are - No one likes a Vengeance paladin. The Dogma specifically: 1. Be fearless 2. Never turn away from a fight. 3. Obey the rules of war. - I will "Be fearless" and face my greatest foe, No Mercy for the wicked/ the sworn, I will obey the rules of war. By any means necessary, My qualms will not get in my way, I will fight fearlessly/never turn away from a fight. Restitution: Reasons why there are wars! Again as you correctly say "anything is possible" therefore its how the player "Interprets" the oaths and executes them to synergize...See more

As you requested, I added Oath of War for Paladins of Tempus as an additional file. Hope you enjoy it, and it was what you were looking for. This one felt a bit more challenging to me than the others. So let me know how I did and what you think.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
