D&D 5e Monster Expansion

Do you love classic monsters such as orcs, gnolls, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, trolls, wights, wraiths, and wild beasts and miss them once they no longer pose a challenge to your party?

This booklet provides 26 iconic monsters expanded across higher challenge ratings. Now even experienced adventures can still encounter challenging fights against these kinds of opponents (and druids can find greater beasts that are both pratical and worthwhile to wild shape into beyond CR 2.)

Update (V.4, 1/27/2017): Corrections to Hobgoblin General (parry, attack value).

Update (V.3, 3/16/2016): Minor clarifications to Dread Wraith (Incorporeal Movement, Cause Fear); minor correction of typos in a few text descriptions.

Update (V.2, 2/9/16): Minor corrections to Goblin King, Wight King, and Dread Wraith in line with Monster Manual Errata (1.1).

Hi Scott, I purchased your product. Do you have any XML files for Game Master 5?

I'm afraid I don't. To be honest, I'm not even sure what XML files are? I don't know what Game Master 5 is either, sorry.

Sure, you're very welcome to use any of these creatures in your own work. That's the nice thing about the DM's Guild--everything added to it become a community resource. A link back is nice acknowledgement, thank you.

the hit points of the hobgoblin sergeant seem a bit low for his challenge rating

Thanks for the comment, Steve. I see your point, and it is a tricky question. Certainly the hobgoblin sergeant has fewer hit points than any comparable CR 2 monster (gnoll pack lord, ogre, or even the goblin king). However, its 4d8 hit dice and 22 hp fit in perfect progression in between the standard hobgoblin (CR 1/2) and the hobgoblin captain (CR 3). Additionally, it is important to consider that hobgoblins in general have low hit points compared to similar creatures, especially orcs. This is because their advantage lies in offense (multiattack and martial advantage) and very high AC. Given these advantages, it seems reasonable for the hobgoblin sergeant to have considerably fewer hit points than, say, the gnoll pack lord or an ogre. But if you as DM wanted the sergeant to be a little tougher, you could boost its Con up to 14, which would raise its hp from 22 to 26.

For the Dread Wraith''s Incorporeal Movement, should it read "...when it is not Bearing any items", or "...not Wearing any items"?
Both make sense, but if it is Bearing then it may be clearer to say "not carrying or wearing any items" which is similar to how you worded it under Incorporeal Substance if it will not work with the Rapier as well.

Great work on everything!

Thanks for pointing this out, Alex, that's a good catch. As fans of Tolkien will catch, the inference behind the 'Dread Wraith' is that it can drop its robes and gear and fly off as a disembodied specter, as the ringwraiths. I'll make the edit to the document and upload a new corrected file.

My thanks for the positive feedback and to those who left reviews of my work. I'm glad folks don't mind the lack of graphics and appreciate the substance and effort (I'm just a private writer and certainly not an artist). I would like to offer a response regarding Challenge Ratings. When making new (or expanded) monsters, you have two choices: 1) follow the guidelines in the DMG, or 2) look at existing MM creatures and base the stats and CR on them. As I find the DMG guidelines opaque with usually unsatisfying outcomes, I chose the second route. For instance, when designing the Greater Ape (Large, CR 3), I determined its stats as a proportionate progression of the MM's Ape (Medium, CR 1/2) and Giant Ape (Huge, CR 7); I then compared these stats to existing CR 3 beasts in the MM (e.g., Giant Scorpion) to make sure this new creature wasn't overly powerful or weak. When designing the Greater Lion and Greater Tiger (both Large, CR 5), I gauged their stat progression from the CR 1 base creatures by looking at the MM's...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
