Hey,
I bought the german translation of this and I made a Roll20 compatible Battlemap for the dungeon with Dungeon Painter Studio where I translated the map to 1 square equals 3 foot. Would it be okay if I publish it here (for free of course) and on Reddit with a Link to your adventure? Because I thought other people may need this too.

Ran this earlier in January with my group. They players enjoyed the shifty situation in the town. Fun to DM and fun for my players. Thank you!

[SPOILER]
I don't understand the significance of the bag of rubies with the name of the town attached. Or is this purposefully ambiguous for the players to guess at the meaning?

Anyway, this looks like a super fun adventure. I'm stoked to run it as a first time DM for my players next week!

It's a little ambiguous, but my goal was to suggest someone inside the town was in league with the goblins. I would tighten up that clue if I were writing it again.

I ran it exactly as written. My players connected the dots perfectly. Great adventure! And the McGuffin is turning into a big mysterious centerpiece of our campaign!

I bought this as part of a bundle, and I have a quibble about the trapped strongbox. Shouldn't the villain have the key on them (or at least somewhere in their room)?

There's a misprint - the strongbox is meant to be trapped, but there is no lock on it. Just a latch.

Customer avatar
Matthew R May 29, 2018 7:12 pm UTC
In that case, how does the villain get into their strongbox without setting off the trap?

The idea is that there is a way of flipping the latch without setting off the trap. Perhaps you press and hold the hinge pin or something. If anyone opens without doing that, the trap goes off. Anyone making their successful check discovers the trap and the mechanism to bypass it.

In retrospect, it's not well worded.

I bought before signing up, so it seems I can't rate it. But I think 4.5 stars is about right. I hadn't DM'd in 30 years or so, and found this an good one for easing back in. The layout helps steer the party for the most part, and it's a nice blend of story, mystery, and battle. My only hangup is that it seemed a little hard for a party of five first-level characters. Of the characters (all who'd played before, except one), two went sub-zero twice, two went sub-zero once, and only one never got knocked out. Took us about 4 hours to get through it. I'll definitely check out more of his adventures.

This is a well done adventure. All the necessary information is actually present and easy to reference. It is well targeted to a level 1 group of 4; it's not super easy, but it's not ridiculously hard, either. And the dungeon was very nicely laid out; very easy to describe to the players. Whether intentional or not, it even provided areas that dark vision capable characters couldn't see completely.

I look forward to running the next two adventures in this trilogy, and hopefully more.

(This is my review. Evidently I can't add a review for the individual adventures because I bought the trilogy.)

I ran this as a one shot for my first time being a DM. This was a very fun 4.5 hour quest that worked out rather well. Two players in my party were quick to point out that this was like a scooby doo mystery, but enjoyed the adventure none the less. I bought this as part of the three pack, so I cannot review it here, but 5 stars! Thank you for this great adventure!

Hallo mister Black. I'm a huge fan of your adventures, expecially Temple of the Nightbringers and Tower of the Mad Mage. I would like to try them both with a group of new characters at lvl. 1
I was thinking to play one of the two first, let them level up to lvl. 2 and then try the other. What do you think would be better to play first, then lete them level up and play the other?

Hi Alessandro - thankyou very much for the kind comments. I think you will do fine running the modules in either order. If I had to choose, I would probably suggest Tower of the Mad Mage first as I think the encounters are slightly easier. But you will do fine either way!

Even if it is technically "free" thanks to being PWYW, the adventure is worth a contribution for sure.
A printer friendly version would be most welcome.

I'd like to thank you for creating this adventure. Five friends and I who had never played before used this as our first quest. I customized a few names to fit into a home-made world and once the adventure was over, it provided ample opportunity for me to generate my own follow up quest. Our group's success is owed entirely to you.
Thanks,
Jonathan Denny.

I'm new to D&D. I just finished my first campaign as a player. Now I'm trying my hand as a DM. I decided to start with this module. I do have some questions though if anyone who has run this can help? I'm planning on running it for some friends on roll20. I'm open to someone coming along for the ride and watching.

First time DMing and with a group of new D&D adventures. Only finished half of it the first session (too much time spent making chars). Had someone else join in the second session, ended up writing her in in the "kitchen" as a gnome about to me BBQ'd. They loved it and had a blast. Great module! Are you planning on continuing with this story? Otherwise who knows where their adventures will take them. Maybe quest to destroy the mask in a fiery chasm(got to go with classics)

Hi Bryce, thanks so much for this comment, it's very encouraging! I'm currently writing a sequel adventure set in and around Triboar - I hope to have it completed very soon.

PS - Make your players don't rush into room #8!

the 4 adventurers actually made quick work of room 8, between me rolling a 2 for the goblin mass initiative (didnt want to roll 50 times) and a well executed surprise round ending with 4 crits from the party before the goblins where even able to take any turns. only 3 goblins even got a turn

Good work! By the way, I've just published my new adventure, "Terror at Triboar". It is for second level characters and serves as something of a sequel for "Temple of the Nightbringers".

I'd be interested to hear your opinion as a new DM, given it's a slightly more complex adventure, revolving around an urban sandbox.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
