Warden Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Primal power courses through the very core of the warden, a stalwart defender of the wilds. Harnessing the strength of earth, storm, and bestial ferocity, these protectors of nature unleash inner primal might to defeat their foes and protect their allies.

The Warden is a class loosely based on the class of the same name from Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition. With the ability to assume one of three Guardian Aspects, all wardens hold the power to adapt to many situations. Each of the Guardian Aspects has a niche to fill; Aspect of the Forest allows a warden to better protect his allies with earthen strength and fortitude. Aspect of the Storm allows a warden to better focus on their spellcasting abilities. Aspect of the Wild lets the warden take on the aspect of a ferocious beast to quickly skirmish in and out of the fray.

As a half-caster, the warden gains spells up to 5th level, much as a ranger would. The warden also comes with two lower-level spells in the form of Crackle, a first-level spell that deals lightning damage, and Frigid Gale, a 2nd-level spell that deals cold damage to foes nearby, halving their movement speed.

Three archetypes come packaged with the warden in the flavour of Primal Powers. These Primal Powers compliment the core class nicely, adding differing playstyles for warden players. The Earthstrength warden gains features useful in keeping your foes where you want them, and abilities to better protect their party. The Stormheart warden fuels their spellcasting by utilizing the might of the storm, allowing for an interesting combination of melee and spellslinging. Finally, the Wildblood warden strikes quickly with two-weapon fighting, moving deftly in combat to position themselves for victory.

This class has been thoroughly playtested, and is in its finalized version. There should be no issues at the table regarding the power level of the class, as it has been created by taking the core design philosophies of the Player's Handbook classes to heart.

I actually do have a question though. The primal powers (earthstrength, etc) are the archetypes (like oath of ancients/vengeance etc.) correct? And regardless of Primal Power, you can take on any aspect right?

While I absolutely adore the Warden from 4E, this does have a bit of work to be done.

First, the Aspects.

THP granted by Forest is too much. Consider the Fiend Warlock feature; only the Warlock gets THP, and only when they kill a creature. This is half the THP, yes, but to all allies in a radius, and more easily attainable.

Wild grants the +Wis Mod to Saving Throws. At level 1. That's borderline ridiculous, especially when combined with the Font of Life feature. Consider this: I'm a Half-Elf. I have Advantage on ST against Charms, Curse, Disease & Poison, and I add my Wis Mod to all saving throws. And this is at level three.

Stonestrike should Push 15ft on a failed save instead of Prone, and the Bludgeoning damage should be treated as magical. Having Stonestrike and Tremorstep both Prone seems redundant.

Earthen Might should only provide resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing.

Nature's Vigil should provide the AC...See more

Thank you very much for your feedback, it is very much appreciated. There is currently an update in the works to address a few of these issues.

The aspects are intended to be a feature similar to a Barbarian's Rage, with a bit less emphasis on damage, and a bit more on defensive capabilities. The abilities gained by the various Guardian Aspects are balanced against the Barbarian's Rage feature, but the amount of times one can use Guardian Aspect are currently tied to a short rest. Keep in mind that the Guardian Aspect lasts one minute. This will be updated in the coming changes to replenish all uses of the Guardian aspect on a long rest.

Differentiating Stonestrike and Tremorstep is something that has been planned for the update as well, though the original intention was a 10 ft push. The damage of stonestrike is intended to be magical. The PDF will be updated to be clearer on this.

Earthen Might can only be used once per day, and only when assuming a Guardian aspect at level...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
