Bard - College of Mourning

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This Bardic Archetype are for players looking for a new take on their bard. Channeling your sorrow, you are able to make the dead dance to your music and frighten enemies with your funeral march. With the announcement of Curse of Strahd, this should give your bards a more "gothic" feel. There are even background tables to get some inspiration going for your character.  This archetype is inspired by the Dirgesinger prestige class in Libris Mortis for 3.5e. Just let me know what you think would work better or changes that need to be made.

I got here because one of my players wants to use this archetype. Looks good, but you've still got a few spelling mistakes. "experiened" should be "experienced" in the flavor text; later in the same flavor text "do it do" should be "do it to"; "expand" under both Haunting Melody and Song of Awakening should be "expend" (expand = grow, expend = use); Haunting Melody has "concentraton" instead of "concentration"; the power and tradition ideals are missing their periods; "its" under the charity ideal should be "it's"; #4 Dirgesinger's Sorrow should have "put down" instead of "putdown".

It's a solid option, one I would consider myself if I knew a lot of undead would be in the campaign. In the other bardic archetypes, though, cutting words and combat inspiration scale in power as the inspiration die increases, this does not. I think the animated undead should instantly gain an inspiration die upon being animated so it becomes more powerful as the bard does. It also gives the impression that the dirgesinger is inspiring a corpse to do battle for him, which is just awesome.

I added some alternate features that can be used in place of Dead Man's Tongue. Should be fairly balanced.

I really enjoy this archetype. A new type of bard that would be interesting in most situations, especially roleplay ones. In my mind bards are usually energetic and happy people, so this is an interesting twist to that assumption.
Some ideas for additions or possible changes to make. One would be to change the name of the archetype to make it follow along with the other two official Bard Archetypal colleges. I don't know exactly what the name could be, but some ideas I have would be "College of Sorrow", "College of Somber Song", "College of Swan Songs", or even just "College of Dirgesingers". But the creator can go with whatever name they wish.
Second would be to add another table with possible events in the bards life that caused them to choose this path. I liked the ideal table you created and think you could do more with this concept. I look forward to any future edits you make and will probably create at least one NPC with this archetype.

I changed the name and added a (small) table for why your character became a dirgesinger.

Here are my thoughts. First of all, excellent idea, truly great fluff. Now, onto criticizing.
There are some minor spelling errors in the flavour text, but that is of little importance. In the Song of Awakening it references the "awaken dead" spell, but it probably refers to the "animate dead" spell. Finally in the Sympathy of the Dead, it should probably say "hostile undead" so as not to hamper your own undead. All in all, I believe that this is a very good archetype, and that all this document lacks is some good art.
I consider myself pretty good when it comes to judging 5E options, but I'm no real expert. I would suggest waiting for more feedback before the author posts this as "Pay What You Want" or priced product (though I encourage all authors to make their finished work "Pay What You Want").

Thank you for the feedback! Edits have been made, and a new table for Dirgesinger Ideals has been added as an option when making a characters background.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
