Do your players have the wool to survive?

Adventure, danger and a decent dose of downright weirdness erupt when the party’s attempt to grab a rare afternoon of downtime is interrupted by a frantic sheep equipped with a Scroll of Speak to Animals. Soon they are dragged into a magical grudge match that will test their strength, courage and willingness to endure extremely baa’d puns.

Will our heroes be able to overcome a band of transmuted assassins on the hunt for a mutton dinner and fend off an extremely bitter ex-apprentice packing a dangerously unstable magic item?

There’s only one way to find out…

A free single-session adventure

The Wild Sheep Chase is designed to be played from start to finish in just one 3-6 hour session with limited preparation from the DM.

All major characters have roleplaying notes included and the document comes complete with a full-size environmen.

Hey, I'm planning to run it to a complete beginner set of players and want to pre write 4 or 5 lvl4 charachters so it could be done for them in a day (that is all the group has in the summer). What composition of a group wpuld be great for it? Was thinking about Barbarian, bard, cleric, warlock, and one extra not so castery, so it wouldnt be hard on new players.

Sounds good though a party with that many full casters at level four may be tricky for new players

Hey! I saw that this is now available as a translation. If you're also interested in a German translation, send an email my way: christian.eichhorn.dmg@gmail.com
One caveat though before you do: That'd only be possible if we offer it as a PWYW title. If that's ok, let's continue per mail!

Great adventure, and one of the best final boss ever.
Thank you a lot for the fun.

I ran this for 5 Level 3 experienced players. Was concerned about the CR of the encounters so I scaled them all back, but the players breezed through most of the combat. Next time, I'll run the encounters it as written.

I added some extra content in between the encounter with the sheep and Noke's house, which alluded to the wand being unstable and creating creatures that would melt/goopify.

Players all had fun. This is a great adventure to run.

Overall it took 9 hours - but my group likes to RP, and they loot EVERYTHING. They spent an extra 90 mins after the last combat encounter to search the house and take care of any remaining guards.

I scaled this down for 3-4 Level 1 characters and created an additional backstory of a hobgoblin legion that was in cahoots with Noke to build a polymorph army. First encounter was with a hobgoblin and wolf; second encounter was with 2-3 goblin guards outside the house; there was a cockatrice hidden in the central tower that would attack depending on whether they used strength or thieves' tools to enter; final encounter was in the bedroom tower with Noke and a brown bear. If the brown bear was defeated first, then Noke would accidentally turn himself into a frog and thus end combat.

The players ended up not killing the hobgoblin and the wolf in first encounter, so I got creative with the planned encounters. The different spaces easily allow you to introduce/reduce monsters depending on how everyone is fairing hit point-wise, which is nice.

With experienced players, it took 3 hours. With inexperienced players, I might budget 4.

New-ish DM here, having run Phandelver previously. I ran this for 4 lvl 5 characters. They destroyed the first encounter. I added an encounter with 2 owelbears, and another with twig blights and a vine blight on the way to the 2nd encounter. The party then proceeded to mow down the guards. Fortunately, the bed dragon/Noke gave them a little trouble, but I still addedd HP to the dragon and a couple other creatures along the way.. Would definately scale things up for lvl 5 characters. But the party had a good time, and that's what matters the most to me.

Ran this with 3 level 5's. Was absolutely hilarious. Took about 4 - 5 hours, but everyone kept getting distracted and wanting to chase the sheep.

Ran it with a party of (3) level 4's and (1) level 5, and it seemed to be a really fun challenge for them. Would definitely recommend!

How long did the playthrough take? And would it seem reasonable for 3 level 5s? Been out of the game for a while and my group and I are using one shots to get back in

I have a rules nit-pick, but one that I believe is important given True Polymorph's prominence in this adventure.

I realised the "problem" when I was reading this (this guy explains it well):
https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/ak0v9m/5e_can_i_true_polymorph_into_an_ancient_brass/ef0jdez

I was looking at the printed PHB, which doesn't contain the errata, and seems to suggest that dropping to 0 hit points ends the transformation even if it is permanent. But the errata version seems to be more clear that is not the case.

It makes a big difference to your story. (Spoilers from here.) With an incorrect understanding of True Polymorph, beating victims of the wand to 0 hit points would save them. Working on this (false) assumption this leads to a few oddities and plot holes. Examples: Why didn't Shinebright self-harm, or ask the players to beat him up? Why doesn't the adventure mention what happens when the wolves and gorillas are defeated and turn back to humans?...See more

Changed some things to work for a level 1 party. This was their first time playing D&D and it was an amazing “tutorial level” for them. I’m pleased to say they are hooked now.

Worked out great! This was my second experience as a DM and probably only 6th in general. Came with pretty much everything I needed (good to have the wolves and brown bear stats out). I played with 4 level 4 characters and they proved to be a bit pugnacious. Ended up running a very fun 4.5/5hrs. Well done!

What should the spell save DC for the modified wand of true polymorph? I can't find any rules for standard DCs for spell wands. Most wands have a DC in the description. Same as a spell scroll would be? Does it matter who the caster is?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
