I enjoyed DMing this one quite a lot. Their were a lot of decisions that the players would have to make that could lead to quite a few different paths. The only issue was running this for a T1 mostly spell caster party many of them used most if not all of their spell slots during the first fight even though they knew to run (lots of heals being thrown around because people were taking a lot of cross bow bolts). This lead to some tough fights where most of the people had no remaining spells to use in the later encounters. This is more of an issue with the party than the module but its something to think about with your party makeup. Overall very enjoyable though.

Great time DMing this. But be sure to drop a hint or 2 for first encounter that the party should probably flee.

Great open world story. Definitely not a module for first time DMs to run, but it should be a goal for new ones to play this second. Player decisions matter and the DM can easily reward/horribly murder players for their choices.

This is easily the best module written for Adventurers League from the seasons that I have played, which were seasons 1 - 3 (Tyranny of Dragons, Elemental Evil and Rage of Demons). An urban adventure of investigation and action. The maps are superb and the setting is colorful.

Great investigation story! I've run into some issues with adventurers wanting to do multiple investigations from the first series of locations, but as I've gotten comfortable running it, I've been able to deliver the series 2 information in an appropriate way. 5/5 stars!

Nice combo of investigation and combat with a lot of room for the characters to choose how to approach the problem that the face. The story telling requires a lot of hand waving to kick the story off (thanks in no small part to game mechanics)

Generally speaking I don't love modules with branching paths, but this one was very well organized and thought out. Kudos to the writer. What wasn't as well thought out was the opening scene, with a major plot development happening in deus ex machina time. Players are surprised automatically, even thought the Alert feat or a weapon of Warning can prevent that. Players can't see through the darkness, but Light domain's channel divinity will easily dispel it and many warlocks can see right through it. These can drastically change how the mod runs unexpectedly.

This is a good mod that combines investigation and combat well, but it takes a lot of prep work to run effectively because, while it is a 4 hour mod, players can take several different branching paths to reach the end, which will only cover half of the actual content in the mod. Additionally, the combat bits are less straight-forward than encounters in other mods in a way that is a lot of fun but more complex to run. This is all to say that a DM should be aware that preparing for this mod will take more work than usual.

DMs should also be aware that the magic item in this mod is very likely to start a fight if loot distribution goes poorly at the end, so make sure everyone is clear on the rules for that.

This is an excellent module with a great balance of investigation and combat. The clue tree was extremely helpful in terms of preparation and keeping players on track to finish the game on time, the fact that the players don't get to visit every location or find every clue means that this module has great replay value. I also really liked the chase rules given in the module, which are very easy to understand and explain to players, and the chase complications really help make the chase a dynamic and exciting end to the module.

I have not run this adventure itself, but I have used the chase rules in other adventures. I much prefer them to the rules in the DMG. This is worth getting just for the chase rules!

Review as a player:

This module is good show of who the cloaks are and a bit of insight of how they work. The investigation was fun but majority of our group were not role players and felt it bogged down things a bit. A good module for if you have people who like to interact with the world, would not recommend for combat happy group.

Played this adventure as a player. Stars: 5/5
I loved the investigation vibe this adventure gave us. Being chased, when had to find clues to what actually happened, and find and finish the actual perpetrator. Constantly looking around with enemies in persuit, you have to find the next clue to progress. They logically link to each other, and are challenging, but not too hard to find. Afterwards the GM showed me a flowchart, which showed that there were different routes to go depending on what we did, so you won't get stuck.

To run this as a DM was fun the investigation was well done and the flow chart for the adventure really helped me keep a mental picture of how the module ran. The chase rules in the final part of the adventure is really got my players excited. Would love to run this again. I feel the replay value of this module is high.

Cloaks and Shadows is one of my two FAVORITE mods. It's fun to play and super easy to GM. Bless any writer who puts an easy to follow diagram into the mod to help the GM prep.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
