Mayhem in the Earthspur Mines

Riddled with veins of precious ore and gem, the Earthspur Mountains to the west have long been a valuable resource for anyone able to mine them. One such mine has gone silent and the only thing more concerning than its long overdue shipment is the fate of the members of the Soldiery sent to discover what has happened to the mine’s workers. Though the mine lay in a region of the Mountains once claimed by a clan of reclusive dwarves, the Ludwakazar clan wouldn’t be so bold as to violate their long-standing peace with Mulmaster. Or would they?

An adventure for 5th-10th level characters.

Bought this adventure and am super looking forward to it. My only question (so far) is how do you run the gladiator fight at the beginning with a part of 4 or 5 people? It seems like the way it's written, it's only one or two PCs that join the other NPCs. If not, it'd be like 6 on 1 for the 2nd fight. How you recommend only getting a few PC from the party to fight while the others watch?

Good adventure, but really difficult to run in a 4 hour block. To do properly requires more like 6-7. Fights in the mines can become a real slog if your party is melee-minded and you're not willing to do some cinematic hand-waving to move things along. Large numbers of enemies with damage resistance makes for slow combats.

If you're not running AL, and able to take some liberties with the story, there's great material and flavor here to work from. The mines themselves are a well designed dungeon with multiple entrances and some cool set pieces.

The Boar Pit fighter's average HP (58) does not line up with its variable HP (15d8+45). Looks like the BPF was originally going to be based on a gladiator template, and that was later changed to a veteran template, but the gladiator's 15d8+45 was inadvertently left in. Since the BPF's CR is listed as 3, I suggest using the veteran's 58 (9d8+18) as its HP.

I ran this with a table of 7 and it took 7 hours with some streamlining, combat could be a slog or last 2 rounds depending on the party makeup due to most enemies in the mine having resistance to non magical weapon, the Social scenes are fun though.

I had fun running this adventure, but I feel like it’s pretty dense for a 4 hour mod. There’s also a fair amount of story stuff at the end, which is pretty useless when I was running it as a stand alone for a public AL event, but I’m sure other groups could find some fun in it.

Assuming it was run correctly, a single Con save to avoid 1d4 levels of exhaustion was BRUTAL! 3/5 of our group were hit with 4 levels of exhaustion, which turned most of the module into a punishing slog for these characters.

Did you catch the bit where the dwarves remove all the characters' exhaustion before they head to the mine? The exhaustion is intended to affect the yeti fight only.

This was fun to run but longer than 4 hours. This look like an easy 6-8 hours. Depending on the cohesion of your group the encounters are nicely balanced. The social encounter give lots of chance for good role play. Overall good aventure.

Question about the renown in this adventure: I note that all five factions have a special objective to complete in this module however in the conclusion only four of these factions are rewarded with an additional renown point. Is this intentional that members of the one faction are not rewarded or is this an error in the write up?

That's odd, it seems to have been lost somewhere along the line. The intention is that all five faction assignments are rewarded with renown for successful completion.

That's what I thought happened here. Do I have your permission to update the errata sheet to indicate that all factions get an additional renown for completing their respective missions?

Fantastic module.

The players found the coliseum exciting, even though the fights were trivial despite my best efforts, and the mines themselves have some great set pieces. The social interaction with the various dwarves also proved a highlight, with the players being moved by the brother's story and the King's death.

I ended up greatly increasing the encounter difficulty in the mines, but that is just because they have been playing together for months as a balanced, organized group.

In total I think we went somewhere around six hours.

I've run this mod SO many times. It's a little long if you want to do all the things (takes more than 4 hours), but that's okay. It's got fun encounters and a great chase scene.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
