"Come on," they said. "It won't be so tough, just stopping a slavery ring," they said.

"I don't know," you said. "Those slaves aren't even entirely human! How do we know they won't try to kill us?"

But you went, and now you're having second thoughts. There were the thieves in the lost crypts of Empyrea, raising hundreds of—no, that's too disturbing to think about. There were the three dragons who—no, that's too painful to remember too. Now there's this egg of the Phoenix. What does that have to do with anything? This was supposed to be a cut-and-dried stop-the-slavers job. Who said anything about retrieving lost artifacts?

Trudging through forest, traipsing through castles, trotting through dungeons, traveling through other planes: this has turned into more than your run-of-the-mill adventure. The compensation had better be worth it! Provided, of course, you're around at the end to collect your share.

Product History

I12: Egg of the Phoenix (1987), by Frank Mentzer & Jennell Jaquays, is the twelfth intermediate-level adventure for the AD&D line. It was released in March 1987.

Origins. The adventures that compose Egg of the Phoenix began life as a series of four standalone adventures written by Mentzer that were run as tournaments at Gen Con East I (1981) and Gen Con XIV (1981). These adventures were then released exclusively to RPGA members as R1: "To the Aid of Falx" (1982), R2: "Investigation of Hydell" (1982), R3: "Egg of the Phoenix" (1982), and R4: "Doc's Island" (1982). Today, they're among the rarest and most expensive of D&D modules.

Several years later, TSR decided to collect the four adventures as a mass-market "super module." Freelancer Jaquays was given the task of preparing the adventures for a combined publication—but may have misinterpreted the assignment by combining them into a single connected campaign. Jaquays also adjusted the adventures, including turning one of Mentzer's heroes into a villain.

Continuing the Intermediate Adventures. Egg of the Phoenix continued TSR's long-running "I-series" of adventures (1981-88). It was a close match for its immediate predecessor, I11: "Needle" (1987), which was also a series of loosely connected RPGA adventures by Mentzer.

After Egg of the Phoenix, the "I" series would dramatically change. I13: Adventure Pack I (1987) and I14: Swords of the Iron Legion (1988) were both full-blown anthologies, containing much shorter, totally unconnected adventures.

Adventure Tropes. Egg of the Phoenix is a classic D&D adventure that focuses largely on four major dungeons. With that said, there's a lot of variety in the dungeon design—which includes caves, fanes, and another plane—and there's also a teeny bit of outside adventure, a village, and some other action in interludes.

Expanding Greyhawk (Sort of). Egg of the Phoenix is set in the Union of New Empyrean, which was part of Frank Mentzer's own Aquaria campaign. In the early 80s, Gygax and Mentzer agreed to turn Aquaria into an eastern continent for the world of Oerth, but unfortunately Gygax left TSR before this could (officially) happen.

Monsters of Note. This adventure marks the first adventure appearance of the Princes of Elemental Evil, who were introduced in the Fiend Folio (1981).

Future History. Three items from Egg of the Phoenix—"Doc", the demon Grintharke, and the gate cube—reappear in FR5: "The Savage Frontier" (1988), also by Jaquays.

About the Creators. Frank Mentzer had just finished work on the D&D BECMI series (1983-86) and would soon be leaving for Gary Gygax's new company, New Infinities. He had little if anything to do with the revision of his original modules. Paul (now Jennell) Jaquays was just starting her freelance work with TSR. She also worked on DQ1: "The Shattered Statue" (1987) and M5: "Talons of Night" (1987) around the same time.

Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. I reported the lack of maps on the POD back to Drivethrurpg and to their credit they have printed the missing pages (appendices 1, 2, pre-gen chars & maps) and sent them to me in a refreshed, bound, *complete* module. Thank you! So for those who have made the purchase before, just provide the feedback and you may get the same resolution as me.

I'm confused. You have to buy the POD then complain that the maps are missing and only then will they give the complete module?

Bought two POD copies on 7/21/22 because it's my favorite module of all time. POD Missing hand outs. Being POD didn't fix the issues I've now noticed in the discussions. RIP $30.

Same for me - reported to Drivethrurpg and they sent out a new complete POD. Ask them for a new copy complete with the missing handouts.

Still not fixed as of 7th July 2015. At least DNDClassics were very prompt in refunding me when I told them. They say they're going to update the description to mention that the map booklet is missing, let's hope they do.

The new scan is missing the 20-page Playing Aids booklet which contains the six pre-generated PCs and all the maps except for DM Map I (on the inner cover) and Players' Map XXIII (on the outer cover).

The original 2001 scan included this booklet: I hope Wizards of the Coast will fix the new scan, as it's otherwise superior to the old one.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
