The Scroll Thief

Scholars Square is a relatively quiet corner of Phlan, but a series of odd thefts have the headmasters of verious schools in the area concerned. The headmasters' pleas for help have gone unanswered by the Black Fist, and the Lord Sage of Phlan decided to reach out to you and your kind to bring those responsible to justice.

The Scroll Thief

This first part of this module starts out with the investigation of a mysterious theft and interviews of the potential suspects. It culminates with a chase through the sewers of Phlan and final battle with a young wyrmling.

The NPCs in this module are well fleshed out and there is ample description of sights and sounds for every location. I got to chew the scenery portraying all of the suspects and it was a blast.

Also, mystery type modules like this can go off the rails quickly. You need to control the game pace and steer the conversation to keep it from go off on some tangent and exceeding 4 hours of game play.

This is one of my favorite modules to run for players. It has some investigation that is required, and critical thinking on the players part.
I rate it 4.5/5

*Warning spoilers ahead*
Here one thing I did that really paid off in this.
* Soares used thieves cant when talking to the players. For the characters in that spoke it, I gave them the "Welcomers send their regards" message. Everyone else saw this.
- Walking to you is an elf wearing leather armor and sporting many tattoos and he begins a diatribe.
- "Cvaal Daoran has been an outrage to this city, and we need to move back to a ruling council. The elf hands piece of paper with anti-establishment jargon written on it.
- Daoran's black fists have been oppressive and causing problems to everyone. He waves his arms in the air in a half circle, with two fingers curled.
- Would you be willing to stand up and make your voice heard? We, the people, need your help!" ...See more

As a forewarning, this is a heavy RP mod with less combat than others. If you have a group that enjoys combat more than a murder mystery style adventure, best to skip this one. Otherwise, this is a fun "who done it" style adventure. The final battle does leave something for want honestly. Even though it is a dragon with additions it felt slightly toothless with my group.

This was fun module to run. It's got three or four nice fights with some classic enemies. I had a full group with a mix of levels 3, 2 & 1 so going in I thought some of the battles might be a bit tough (Spectres!) but the dice were on the players' side that night and they made it through.

The opening section where the players get to play at detective is pretty good too. There's a few ancillary mysteries to solve (And separate opportunities for all factions to earn extra Renown) which adds a bit of depth to a straightforward hook (Find some missing books!). There's maybe one bit of the mystery that, in my mind, doesn't quite flow so I had to do some mental gymnastics to set the players on the right path.

Managed to shepherd my group through in about 4hrs10min. The game store was closing so I rushed a bit at the end, but without the pressure we probably would have been done in 4hrs30min.

I thought that the mystery element of this adventure was generally well done, but this module relies on drawing players to a false conclusion about the culprit. It would have benefited from general time estimations for each section to help DMs keep things at the appropriate pace. Also the magic item was hidden behind a Perception DC, and I don't usually like that in an adventure. Overall pretty good though.

This is an interesting mystery module if told right. Its longer and more involved at 4 hours, but again if played right is amazing. It introduces several classic encounters in a fresh way. I think the module allows for it to be played numerous ways, which is interesting on repeated play thrus. A classic.

Fun Module to run as my first time DMing.

Starts out with lots of RP and clue seeking, then switches to pretty combat heavy in the mid/late section. Really well written and good opportunites to improvise with all the NPCs in the beginning.

Took me ~6hours to run, but part of that may have been my inexperience with being a DM.

The final fight was a bit easy as written for my players, who were pretty experienced with 5e. I probably should have given the dragon full HP/

I liked the thinking part for my group and I really emphasized the clues. It is a great start/intro to D&D with RP and a little bit of combat. My table was very young and mostly new to D&D and they still had fun. I described it as "Sherlock D&D". Good module but watch the investigation portion or it will go way over time.

5/5. Ran at my FLGS, and it's a blast. I have a bit of a soft spot for this module, but it's a wonderful way to get new players interested in D&D, and it's a great three-pillar adventure. There's plenty of RP, and a bit of exploration in the library, and my newer players lit up and shouted in joy when they realized they were going to fight a dragon in D&D after exploring a dungeon. It does require a bit of a mixed party, and some of the plot transitions (Why are adventurers looking for missing books anyway? Why isn't "2 missing librarians" the more important thing to investigate?) are a bit ill-conceived, but for the most part it's a blast. My only word of warning is that it really needs more like 2.5/3 hours to be run comfortably. I had to hand-wave a lot of stuff after my players spent too much time investigating early on.

Great first scenario for my first time. Highly recommended you don't do like my players and all roll up a wizard. They used magic against the dwarf, losing out on that exp and clues and I killed two of them with a halfling holding a stick.
Otherwise quite good!

This and Harried in Hillsfar are probably my favorite ways to introduce a player to 5e. Not only is it a blast to play, but this has just about everything you could want. The investigation sections allows players to make use of their skills and gives some awesome RP moments, and the players get to feel awesome when they fight, and hopefully kill, an actual dragon. And they gain some pretty nice loot for it too. All in all, a great adventure.

I'd strongly recommend this module if you're looking for an easy pick up. I'm pretty fond of it after having run it four times. The hook doesn't feel very strong as far as a call to adventure but by the end of the investigation things step up. I find the sewer and archive encounters to be rather challenging. The magic item itself is interesting enough.

I personally love the investigation, RP part. I must admit tho that more than one player has said that the first 2/3 felt useless since no matter what they do, theyll end up chasing him anyway. I know that may have been bad DMing on my part but I tend to agree that "Books are stolen" beeing morphed into "2 people missing" felt forced, again: that was probably my fault. Aside from that I like it a lot! If you play the dragon really mean, then the final encounter is pretty challenging so feel free to kill a few adventurers. I have to say tho that I don't like the magic item in this adventure, think about if it makes sense for your group to have it, and maybe skip it if you feel like me.

This is a decent investigative scenario with an underwhelming final encounter.

As written this is perfectly serviceable until the end, where I recommend giving the creature in the final encounter extra hp according to a maximum of its hit dice (within the allowed limits of AL play). Definitely do this if you have a rogue(s) in the party, even more so if they are assassins.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
