EX2 The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror (1e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Your adventures have taken you to strange places before, but in the eyes of your experienced party, few of these places are as unusual as the bizarre Land Beyond the Magic Mirror. Here the delightful and the light-hearted often hide great challenges and dangers; here you will journey through a landscape unique among fantasy role-playing scenarios.

This adventure was first conceived by E. Gary Gygax as part of the Greyhawk Castle dungeon complex and has been the source of challenge and fun for many skilled players of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game. It is finally available to all players and can be added to your existing campaign with ease.

"The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" is designed so that it may be used with its companion scenario, EX1: "Dungeonland." Still, "Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" may easily be played on its own, and should offer hours of excitement in its strange landscape!

Product History

EX2: "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" (1983) is the second "EXtension" to Castle Greyhawk published by TSR. It appeared in 1983.

Sources. "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror is based on Lewis Caroll's Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871). This module ended a year of literary adaptations from TSR, which had already seen Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) adapted as EX1: "Dungeonland" (1983) and Romeo & Juliet adapted as UK1: "Beyond the Crystal Cave" (1983).

A Shared History. "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" largely shares its history with "Dungeonland." Together, they represented the public's first look at Gary Gygax's Castle Greyhawk - though only through the intermediary of distant "demiplanes" that you could get to from the Castle.

Gygax's final AD&D book, WG6: "Isle of the Ape" (1985), would feature one more demiplane, also based on a literary source.

Expanding Greyhawk. The mysterious beings Murlynd, Keoghtom, and Heward are all mentioned in "Mirror." Gygax explains who they are in "Greyhawk's World" in Dragon #71 (March 1983). Short answer? They're quasi-deities - not demi-gods and definitely not "heroes."

New Monsters. Among the new monsters introduced in EX2 is the "lightning quasi-elemental," which inhabits the boundary between the air elemental plane and the positive material plane. The lightning elemental's appearance marked the first real usage of a new theory for the elemental planes that Gygax had introduced in Dragon #73 (May 1983). There he posited the existence of eight "quasi-elemental planes," each located between an elemental plane and either the positive or negative plane.

The Adventure Continues. "Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" can be connected directly with "Dungeonland." Though Gygax had once hoped Castle Greyhawk would be published in the early 80s, by the time EX2 was published, he said "that is likely to be years from now." It would in fact be seven years before the publication of Greyhawk Ruins (1990), which wasn't even directly based on Gygax's original game.

About the Creators. "The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror" was the final adventure release from a busy period of Gygax's creativity which also produced Monster Manual II and three other adventures. After that, only a few more Gygaxian Greyhawk adventures would appear, and those only with the help of Rob Kuntz and Frank Mentzer.

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. Please feel free to mail corrections, comments, and additions to shannon.appelcline@gmail.com.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

IF YOU WANT A POD (Sorry for the all caps, it gets lost otherwise)

I contacted DriveThruRPG and they said a POD is completely out of their hands; you have to contact Wizards of the Coast and ask them directly.
So: Here is Wizard's phone number from facebook: +1 425-226-6500

[WoTC used to have an email address and a "contact Wizards on Messenger" link but those have disappeared.]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
