City of Danger

On the southern shores of the Moonsea, the residents of Mulmaster have eked out a living where others would likely have given up long ago—in a bleak city where corruption is rampant and the Church of Bane holds sway. In these five short, introductory adventures, you will travel the breadth of the City of Danger, meet its people, see its sights, and witness firsthand how the city truly has earned its ominous moniker.

An introductory adventure for 1st-2nd level characters.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

I played the first adventure. I wondered what would happen if I killed the air cultist. I also wondered what would happen after I finished this DDEX2-01, do I then continue with DDEX2-02 or they are disconnected?

I ran this, comic store's copy, for a group of five players, average level 2 (3 level 1s, 1 level 2, 1 level 4) and the battles were painful. Entire groups were going down with single spells. Bosses on the "very hard" settings were dropping one turn into the second round of combat. However, and I can't believe I'm "complaining" about this, the adventures were very top heavy with investigation and RPing. Normally, that's the things I really enjoy, but in AL, players are almost penalised for engaging with the plot. So this group would take forever (mostly the fault of the people not paying attention) to get to the single combat encounter and then the combat would be over before the big nasties could be particularly nasty.

Everyone had fun, which is the important thing, but compared to other adventure league content, this module feels substantially less fair to player time commitments.

4*, solid missions with a good introduction to the insanity of the Cults of Elemental evil. Seeing the players realize how some things happened was both hilarious and satisfying. Seems to be a few errors regarding what Checks should be used and what stat is assigned to those checks,

I had the opportunity to run this module for my local gamestore and had friends playing when I ran it for the first time. I really enjoyed the Elemental Air, Fire, and earth cult missions. Especially when everyone at the table freaked out at a Hippogrif joining the fray. But really felt as though the "water" trail was the least exciting, just felt as though it was just thrown in there. But the players loved interacting with Ma at the leaning boot and really enjoyed the introduction that the first three trails brought to the table.

I have run these modules several times. I have enjoyed them however it really helps to know the modules well and be careful of the plot problems and editing issues (such as the error in "Love Like Raging Fire" with it say you need to go to the Black Blade and Bloody Boar Tavern yet they meant to say the Leaning Boot). Saul the NPC is very useful to use as a way to influence the characters in the beginning.
The Envy Like Crushing Earth mod is very odd because your suppose to protect the tavern yet your suppose to fallow the gnome down the rabbit hole for very little reason.
This set of modules has lots of potential but it will take a good DM to fix its plot hole issues.

Our table loved the balloon pack escape at the end of "Hatred Like Clawed Wind." Other than that, the quality is variable and the editing is slipshod. "Love Like Raging Fire" requires that you talk to a ridiculous number of NPCs before advancing the plot."Fear Like Dark Oblivion" switches the plot mid-story, and doesn't include a diagram or map.

Spoilers Below -- DM Notes -- SPOILERS BELOW -- DON'T READ BELOW UNLESS YOU ARE RUNNING THIS ADVENTURE

Here are some issues, fixes, and general DM prep suggestions for the five mini-adventures.

Since many of the hooks are weak, I took the advice about Saul the NPC Halfling. I made him Astrid Saj's right hand man. Saul can tell the party about a merchant owner looking for some guards (Envy Like Crushing Earth) or a Count looking for discreet help (Love Like Raging Fire) as part of a general pattern of sending the party work in exchange for a "fair cut of the profit or a future favor." When it comes time for "Greed Like Fathomless Water," I had Saul call in a favor and ask the party to help his friend, Dylorha. That was much stronger than the "damsel in distress" hook that was provided.

Very poor module. "Hatred like Clawed Wind" and "Love like Raging Fire" works more or less fine, but they may be somewhat flavorless for veteran players because they are too simple and straightforward. They are probably better for new players. The other three aren't even credible, seems like the author doesn't put much effort on them.

(SPOILER ALERT) I run "Envy like Crushing Earth" twice to a total of 9 players and none of them wanted to descend to the unkheng hole bellow Oxpit Tavern to track a random gnome that seemed to be unconnected to the vandals, specially while they should be guarding the tarven in the meanwhile. I think the gnome should be mistaken as one of the vandals that attack the tavern at night, but the module suggests that the gnome would be friendly if approached diplomatically. I fell on this trap and none of the players gone down the hole after her. The vandals never appeared and the players got no payment. Fail adventure.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
