DL10 Dragons of Dreams (1e)

Silvanesti... ancient homeland of the elves. The wonders of Silvanesti are fabled throughout Krynn - The beauty of its forest where each tree is uniquely shaped by elven skill, its gardens of song, its cities molded lovingly from uncut stone. All this and more make up its legendary beauty.

Yet now the Silvanesti elves are gone. For long years, their warriors stood against the hordes of the Dragonarmy. Then, suddenly, they fled their wondrous land and journeyed onto the west. Something more terrible than dragons caused the fall of the Eternal Kingdom.

At the bidding of the Princess Alhana, you enter the fabled Land of Dreams?now fallen into a nightmare!

"Dragons of Dreams" picks up the tale of Tanis, Caramon, Raistlin, and others as they flee from the ruins of Tarsis. It is the tenth in a series of fifteen Dragonlance adventures for use with the AD&D system. You can play this adventure by itself or as part of the grand Dragonlance story.

An adventure for characters level 8-10.

Product History

DL10: "Dragons of Dreams" (1985), by Tracy Hickman, is the tenth in the Dragonlance Chronicles series of adventures. It was published in December 1985.

Continuing the "DL" Series. "Dragons of Dreams" begins the third (and final) book of Dragonlance. It picks up where DL6: "Dragons of Ice" (1985) left off by depicting the adventures of the other group of companions after the party got separated in Tarsis. Telling two parallel stories in a series of adventures was quite innovative at the time and remains so today.

Like its predecessors, "Dragons of Dreams" is a novelistic, epic adventure. It runs 40 pages, including the 32-page adventure and an 8-page booklet of player and GM material.

Dragon of the Month. This is the green dragon adventure, centered on Cyan Bloodbane, the malignant green dragon crouched at the heart of Silvanesti. The result was very successful, as Dragon #356 (June 2007) listed Cyan as the second most wanted dragon in D&D. He was the only Dragonlance dragon to make the list, but he got beat out by Dragotha, the dracolith.

The color green is used for the border of Dragons of Spring Dawning (1985), and thus Cyan is probably meant to be the iconic dragon of the third part of the Dragonlance story … but he's not omnipresent like the red and blue dragons were in previous parts of the story.

Adventure Tropes. The adventure starts out as a standard hex crawl, but then the PCs enter into a realm of nightmare and things become … strange. They travel through three layers of dreams and move through encounters with many variations. The players also take on the roles of multiple characters over the course of the adventure, some of them real and some of them imaginary — but with the players never knowing which is which.

If run well, the adventure can be evocative and terrifying, full of dreamlike atmosphere.

Love It or Hate It? "Dragons of Dreams" may have been the best-loved Dragonlance adventure, thanks to its memorable baddie, its evocative atmosphere, and its innovative gameplay.

The Novel Connection. Authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman decided to tell the stories of the two groups of companions in parallel in their novels, and so Cyan Bloodbane (and the whole Silvanesti adventure) ironically occurs in the blue book, Dragons of Winter Night (1985). The novel was written well before the adventure, which might be why the novel's description of DL10's events are pretty terse. It can all be found in chapters 8-12 of book 1 of Dragons of Winter Night.

Expanding Krynn. "Dragons of Dreams" extensively details the elven kingdom of Silvanesti … but it's all in a dream realm, so the setting material isn't entirely reliable for wider usage.

About the Creators. Hickman was, of course, the creator of Dragonlance. This was the sixth module in the series that he authored or coauthored. He'd continue on with DL11: "Dragons of Glory" (1986) and DL13: "Dragons of Truth" (1986) while simultaneously co-authoring the popular Dragonlance Legends novels (1985-1986).

About the Product Historian

The history of this product was researched and written by Shannon Appelcline, the editor-in-chief of RPGnet and the author of Designers & Dragons - a history of the roleplaying industry told one company at a time. We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
