The Gray Merchant of Asphodel: 100+ Theros Magic Items

ProductPage1-FixedClean.jpg

9 ARTIFACTS, 6 LEGENDARIES, 16 VERY RARES
19 rares, 35 uncommons, 24 commons
and 9 story hook items

These items are steeped in the lore of Theros with creative and thematic mechanics that were designed with an eye on balance! They include adventuring gear, rings, potions, rods, armor, and weapons! Items inspired by the text or art of Magic cards are hyperlinked so you can see the source material yourself.

ProductPage2.png

The Gray Merchant is a unique vendor who trades one of his goods for something of yours. He doesn't care what people pay, but the gods do. Underpay and the item is less powerful. Overpay and maybe the item gains new properties. If your campaign doesn't allow magic items for sale, these scaling attributes are still useful in allowing items to adjust in power based on your party's level, making them useful for longer! And if your characters are cash poor, they can pay a different price—have a family heirloom or a beloved childhood toy? Are they willing to give it up for more power?

ProductPage4.jpg

We've created alternate versions of each of the five major deities' signature weapons especially made for their champions to use. Maybe you don't want a weapon balanced around the piety mechanic, or perhaps you just want a different flavor of the gods' wrath. These artifacts open up new options for the plane's mightiest heroes!

Gorgeous artwork accompanies the text, and this product is now available as a hardcover Print-On-Demand product from DMs Guild! For those printing at home, though, we realize no one wants to use more printer ink than needed at home, which is why...

Included with your purchase are grayscale printer-friendly versions with decorative background textures and/or art removed.

PrinterFriendlyDemo.jpg

And to make life even easier for Dungeon Masters, we now have Print & Play handouts for the magic items! These are available in full color or simple black & white. There are reference handouts for each version of the items so you can show your players exactly what they need to know. Shopping at the Gray Merchant? Show only the base version of the item. Overpaid? Print the handouts that show the updated properties! Removed a curse from an item? Swap out the cursed version of the item for the uncursed one!

Reviewers weigh in

"This supplement is a must-have for anyone planning a Theros campaign. Grady is an evocative writer who also happens to have plenty of technical knowledge about both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. Fans of both games will enjoy this collection of magical items. I can't wait to use it in my home game -- I know these will delight, amuse, and perhaps terrify, my players." -Ashley Warren

"The knowledge, understanding and love of the plane, its stories, characters and mythos, as well as the mechanics in Magic: The Gathering and the Theros blocks and sets, radiate from the pages with the brightness of Heliod’s radiance reflecting off a mythic judge’s foil." -Curse of Sebs

"The Gray Merchant is honestly my favorite part of the book...$9.95 might seem a bit steep for magic items, but when there's SO MANY, they're organized this beautifully, illustrated with care, AND you get the wonderful merchant himself, it's totally worth it if you're running a Theros campaign." -Jessica Marcrum https://twitter.com/Miss_Jess03/status/1282744609383354369

Bought the PDF and so far I LOVE it! Can't wait to implement it in the campaign next week. I do have a question concerning the paid/overpaid mechanic: I see there are the suggested price ranges listed, like 50-100GP for the Blade of Hubris. I'm assuming the 50-100 GP is how much a party would need to pay for the item to receive the "paid" benefit. But is there a way to determine how much is considered necessary to be "overpaid", aside from my ruling as the DM?

We designed it with the assumption that any amount above the recommended price range constitutes overpaid, which is why some items have a narrow price range and others have a very large one. As the GM, of course, you can adjust any of the prices and categories, especially if your campaign's economy deviates significantly from the expected earnings present in a WotC adventure. Sorry that wasn't clearly stated. Please let us know if you have any other questions, and thank you for giving our product a try! We're excited to hear the stories that'll come out of it! -Grady

I know in a video, it was mentioned that there’s items for some of the gods, such as the main five that already have items in MOT. Is there also items for the other ten gods?

On page 3 of the preview you can see the Table of Contents, which lists all the items in the supplement. In addition to the five main gods, there are non-artifact weapons for Karametra, Athreos, and Keranos. There is also a legendary warhorn tied to Mogis. There are also items themed for the domains of certain other gods, such as Ephara, Kruphix, Phenax, and Pharika, as well story hooks about resurrecting Xenagos and rescuing a worshipper of Iroas. I think Klothys is the only god without an item associated with her in any way, which was a deliberate choice because the Gray Merchant himself is linked to her in the supplement and thus is unlikely to divulge any of her secrets.

Yes, there should be multiple files associated with the product in your DMs Guild library. The file "1398733-PrintandPlay_ItemHandouts.zip" contains the PDFs for the print and play item handouts.

It is up to the DMs Guild to decide if they'll make a print version available for sale. The print edition in our video was printed through the Barnes & Noble Press private print service (they'll print most anything you upload to them for private use). There were some errors with the copy we got, but once those are fixed, we'll upload the high resolution PDFs we used. At that point, you can do as you like with your copy of the PDF. Anyone who buys the digital version here on DMs Guild will get access to those files. For licensing reasons, DMs Guild will be the only place Gray Merchant can be purchased.

Hi Justen, it looks like Barnes & Noble has changed how they handle PDF uploads. Could you please reach out to thegallantgoblin@gmail.com so we can figure out how to resolve this issue? Thanks! -Grady

Never mind about the previous message. I believe the issue has been fixed. I've refreshed the .zip file that contains the high res PDFs and they should have a new _v3 at the end of the filename. Could you please give that a try and email us if it still doesn't work? Thanks for your patience! -Grady

Thanks, in the mean time i did find a different site that worked for the most part just not with the cover exactly, it only took the front cover and not the back but I did try the newest version and that did seem to fix the issue.
Thanks you for looking into the issue.

The backgrounds were done in Photoshop, then brought into Affinity Publisher (our layout option of choice currently) where the other graphics and text layers were assembled. We're looking at launching a video and blog series on YouTube and our website covering the technical details of how we put stuff together, since we had to work through a lot of questions that likely a lot of creators run into and figured we should share to make it less painful for others! -Grady

I am super excited to flip through this book and can’t wait to use Gary in my home games. I love your channel and am glad to support in any way. Gary will be another traveling merchant in my games a competitor to my Bazaar of Curiosities, a traveling merchant shop run by djinn brothers I’m sure Gary will be a fun rival to them.
.
On a side note I don’t think I got the discount I was using the mobile check out.

Thanks for your feedback, Ricardo! We're sorry to hear about your mobile experience--we've run into some checkout problems on mobile before too. Just to verify, the discount price should be $7.45 so if that's what you paid, then you still got the discount and it just didn't display that it was a discount. If you paid $9.95, though, then unfortunately it glitched out. You can either contact DMs Guild for support or remind us in the future and we'll try to get you a different discount to make up for it!

The Bazaar of Curiosities sounds like great fun! Djinn brothers vs. undead merchant could be an episode of a reality show! Thanks so much for your support!

Yes I paid full price. It’s no big deal Getting a potential discount for a future product by you guys sounds good as long as I remember. Maybe I’ll get a PAID property from Gary on the item haha. I’m flipping through the book now and it’s great love the flavor. Thank you for the quick response!

I am very excited to incorporate this content into an upcoming campaign. I don't have the digital book for Theros yet because I am waiting to get the hardcover version, however I have thoughts on how I could bring the Gray Merchant into the world of Faerun. Maybe Gary, in his endless journey across the lands, accidentally walked over a teleportation circle that was configured to activate on proximity instead of with a key phrase. Maybe the gods of Theros sent Gary to Faerun to spread their influence subtly across those lands. I have a lot of ideas about how to get Gary to Faerun and even around it safely.

Hey Jack, thanks so much for sharing your ideas! Those all sound like great concepts and we love the creativity. The joy of D&D for us is how DMs take these tool kits and put their own stamp on the story, and it sounds like you're going to do it with panache! We were very focused on delivering quality Theros content, so we love that you've found ways to adapt Gary for the Forgotten Realms.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
