Revisiting favorites from previous editions, this handbook is designed to give DMs and players a wealth of new options when it comes to character creation and advancement. Version 1.0 takes the handbook to the next level, with an incredible 50 subraces, 30 racial variants, and 32 racial feats for your 5e D&D adventures.

Subraces and variants for Aasimar, Bugbear, Dwarf, Dragonborn, Elf, Firbolg, Genasi, Gnome, Goblin, Goliath, Grung, Halfling, Hobgoblin, Human, Kenku, Kobold, Lizardfolk, Orc, Tabaxi, Tiefling, and Yuan-ti.

The subraces and revisions are designed to be about as powerful as half-elf, elf, or dwarf subraces.

This document is intended to be updated over time. The current version is 1.0

I know I'm a bit late to all this, but it's there an update with the human : Turami added in? Is the only one I've found so far missing from the PHB subraces. Ty!

I really love this supplement. However, monkey goblins, bugbears, tabaxi and yuan-ti all get shafted with the racial feats, which is really disappointing as there seems to be plenty of groundwork there to build on for a feat. That aside, this is a really great little pdf that offers far more interesting PC race choices than most of the recent official publications.

Honestly, its seems ok, but there really isn't anything going for the Grung in terms of feats. I mean like there is only 1 racial feat. Different poison effects are ok but something to deal with the Water Dependency or a tactical feat due to the organization of the Grungs warriors.

I'm curious what the lythari Ability Score Increase is. Would it be the same as Wood Elf?

They do not get an extra ASI as written, but if you feel they should have one in your game, Wood Elf attributes would be very appropriate.

Thanks Paul

Monkey goblins have "ape-like tails". Apes differ from monkeys with their lack of a tail.

Good catch, when this gets an update it'll probably get changed to "primate-like tails".

Just started in with this, and am really enjoying the possibilities it opens up, but noticed a little oops to clean up in the Variant Aasimar Angelic Heritage Appearance table. There's no result for a die roll of 30, & 45 gets you both "Bald and hairless" and the mutually exclusive "Golden hair and fingernails." Easy enough to compensate for once you see it!

This an amazing product, i can tell that a lot of effort was put into it. I personally like how it goes really in depth with races like Kenku and goliaths which are not very celebrated in 5th edition. altogether great work by Clan Crafter Hralding and an excellent product

Why are there two versions that seems to be the same but the title has "bookmarked" in one of them!? Which one should I save? What's the difference?

This very well done btw

The bookmarked one has bookmarks. I've seen both versions on a few of the downloads here. I'm not sure why you wouldn't want the bookmarks version though.

Hello Thiago, thanks for the comment. I am not currently planning on adding tortle subraces. I am a one-man development team, so the handbook's contents are more-or-less finalized until I do a platinum update.

For your entertainment here's a couple quick variants, with the disclaimer that these ones have not been tested at all, will probably never see print, and will assuredly be more powerful than a vanilla tortle:

Dragon Tortle: Reduce AC by 1, Replace Claws with PHB Dragonborn Breath Weapon, reflavor the fire as steam
Hawkbill/Snapping Tortle: Replace Claws with 1d6 piercing natural weapon.
Spiny Tortle: Replace Claws with the following: While you are withdrawn into your shell and a creature misses you with a melee attack, the creature takes piercing damage equal to half your proficiency bonus.

Have fun with the handbook!

I'd really like to see this (and more titles in DMGuild) listed as Print on Demand... I may be one of the few, but I prefer a book in hand to anything electronic when I'm DMing. Basicly I find POD more economical for anything more than 50 pages if it doesn't have a background on the page, or about 20 pages if it does..(most DMGuild do have it, I'm afraid).

Hey Dale, thanks for the comment. I would also love to see this and my other works made into a PoD option, but the DMs Guild is not allowing most creators to submit products for print. My hope is that sometime in the future I'll be able to publish a compendium of my works and try to get a PoD option for that.
If you would like to help this happen, you can send a friendly message to DMs Guild through the "contact us" and say that it's something you'd like to see, as I understand they do listen to that sort of thing.

It will be a lot of work to port my works over to Fantasy Grounds, as it's a manual replacement process for the data for some reason.
It's not a priority, but I can get it done eventually if there's more folks who'd like a FG version.

The wording in some of the features confuses me a bit. By "bloodied" as in the Bloodbear subrace for Firbolgs and the Brightnose Hobogoblin, does this refer to a creature below its HP Maximum as I can't recall any other official wording that refers to being "bloodied" except from other editions.

That's interesting. I hadn't realized it wasn't a "technical term" anymore. It means the creature's hit points are equal to or less than one-half the creature's maximum hit points, rounded down.
I tend to think of bloodied as part of the lingo of general D&D play, but I may revise the wording in a later revision. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's 4e language, but Chris Perkins uses it to describe the injury status of his monsters on Dice, Camera, Action! and Acquisitions Inc., so I use it too! :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
