Herbalism is the study and practice of the medicinal and therapeutic use of plants. In a world with access to magical plants, this ought to include the creation of magical brews and potions as well.

This supplement intended for 5e D&D gives DMs and Players alike an easy and simple way to handle the foraging of herbs and the brewing of herbal potions. It includes a list of 20 herbal potions, and optional tables of herb names to roll on.

This is amazing. Thank you. I’ve just shown it to my Druid player. One bit which I’m not seeing is the experimentation outcomes table. What sort of rolls would you recommend to decide the progress of a new formulae?

Thank you so much for pointing this out! I had the table typed up, but missed a ] in my Latex so it never compiled... and never threw an error... and somehow I missed it. I've corrected it and updated the file download to v1.2. In case that gives you any more trouble, here's the table:

Check total - Outcome
1-5 - No progress
6-10 - 1 ingredient learned
11-20 - 2 ingredients learned
21+ - 3 ingredients learned

Please let me know how it works out for you and your druid.

That’s brilliant. Thank you so much. I allowed my Druid player to attempt to make his first 4 choices of potion to reflect what he would have started the campaign with plus two spare random ingredients left over in the kit. We’ve already played from level 1 to 5 and this gives a clear and easy use of the herbalism kit he started with and hasn’t used.

I altered Orc Keg to be for strength based attacks only as I didn’t think it made sense to apply it to a spell attack.

I really like the system! A few questions/notes:
White Honey is missing from the table.
Does Orc Keg cause critical on a 19 too? Wording unclear.
Do Wives' Tears affect potions' effects, because potions are alcohol-based?
Do healing potions trigger a reaction if under the effect of another potion?
What would the ingredients be for other potions in the PHB and DMG? E.g. Greater healing potions.
Do potions cause drunkenness?
Can you clarify what each herb characteristic means, to assist home brewing new potions?

Thanks a bunch for commenting!
- An error, I changed it's name to Clear Water in the table and missed it up above.
- Orc Keg is intended to cause a critical on 18, 19, and 20.
- Wives' Tears does not remove potions effects, as the alcohol is only intended as a solvent for the alchemical compounds.
- Healing potions do not trigger a reaction, they and the Clear Water potion are exempt from those restrictions.
- Potions do not cause drunkenness (though if you want to rule it that way go for it, it sounds fun)

I've added a series of fixes to the document to address these and updated the file download, hopefully you can see it on your end.

As for the other two:
- I intended for these herbal made potions to be separate from the potions listed elsewhere, so didn't include them - though I think I may as well at this point. I'd rather just make a separate table for them and update the document again than work it out and list them here. For the greater healing...See more

A separate table has now been created with formulae for all of the potions in the DMG.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
