Announcing Grimlore's Grimoire; a 59-page tome of knowledge that contains 226 new spells for DMs and players, balanced for the D&D 5th Edition ruleset!

What kind of a supplement is this?

This supplement has been created as a passion project and released freely to the D&D community as a Pay What You Want title! I've been a DM for years and, with the help of my players, created tons of homebrew content. This tome represents a massive list of homebrew spells that we've used over the years! After trimming the quirky ones and balancing the rest, we're left with a spellbook containing over 200 new spells across all spell levels; Cantrips to 9th level.

What are you waiting for? Give your players some new spell options for their characters to employ... or maybe you should teach some of Grimlore's spells to your NPCs! Spice up your encounters with some incantations that will be foreign to your players!

Contents:

  • 226 new unique spells balanced for 5th edition,
    • 43 - Cantrips
    • 36 - 1st level spells
    • 32 - 2nd level spells
    • 28 - 3rd level spells
    • 23 - 4th level spells
    • 24 - 5th level spells
    • 19 - 6th level spells
    • 7 - 7th level spells
    • 8 - 8th level spells
    • 6 - 9th level spells
  • Spells listed alphabetically by level and indicating which classes get each spell,
  • A dedication from the tome's author; the deathless Pale Master Grimlore, wishing those who find this tome good luck on their adventures,
  • Notes and art included throughout the tome for readers to obtain some insight into the author's thought process,
  • An additional printer-friendly version of the PDF.

Some typos I noticed recently;

Sorcerer has Shadow Bind listed twice in their spell list.

Battle Beetle says it's a spell for lots of different classes, but only appears in the druid list.

I love these spells and try to use them regularly! Though, I don't always get to. :P

Hi, these spells are pretty awesome and a nice addition to any table.
Some of these spells seem way weaker than SRD counterparts.
For example, I would like to know why Blood Siphon only does a d4, sure you might get 1 or 2 temp hp, but 1d4 damage on a melee spell attack is really low damage. Shocking Grapple for example does 1d8 and has 2 additional effects that are really useful. This is not a criticism in any way, I am just curious.
Again, this is a great supplement and I'm exited about every update.

Hi Florian,

Thanks for your feedback & praise of Grimlore's Grimoire! For Siphon Blood, the biggest reason for the low damage is the temp HP granted on a hit. If you compare it to something like Vampiric Touch, which is 3d6 (with half as HP) as a 3rd level spell slot, we wanted to be careful with something that was a free resource (cantrip).

As siphon blood is only temp hp though, this could probably be increased to a d6.

Where can I find the Pale Master class? I'd be very interested in utilizing it as a villain in a campaign I'm running.

I love the grimoire and have used it for a while, I'm making a new character and have a question about blood dagger.

It says attacks with this weapon use your spellcasting modifer for attack rolls, but don't say anything about damage. Do you add your spellcasting modifer to the damage roll? Do you add your dex like the spell shadow blade? Or do you not add anything?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi Owen,
Thanks for your question! As worded, the bonus only applies to your attack rolls and does not deal additional damage, as it typical with most (all?) cantrips that have spell attacks to hit (vs a saving throw).

Oooohhhh I didn't know it was supposed to be a spell attack roll, I thought it was a weapon attack roll that uses your spellcasting ability score, like shillelagh or grim scythe.

This spellbook is fantastic and can spice up your narration in different ways, even though I normally only use spells from the official books, I end up giving as a magic loot some scroll with some magic from this PDF, it's very worth it, thanks for creating it!.

While I love this, I feel as if there is literally no reason to cast the spell Night Terror, ever.
While it is very, very nice and thematic, the fact that it requires you to spend your ACTION, not your Bonus Action on commanding it to attack makes it feel rather weak.

It is a cantrip after all. Though it is only somatic which means that you could quite easily cast this spell subtly.

Hi, the version 2.05 used to be all in color now the difference between 2.11.1 and 2.11.1-printer-friendly is that the cover page is in color, but the rest of the former is also in shade of grey... :|

Hi Raphël,
We will get this fixed in the upcoming version (so the PF version will actually be PF!). We hope to have GG updated by the end of this month.

OOh woow! that was a fast response! (: But does printer friendly mean something more than shade of grey? if not, the PF is already PF. It's the non-PF that is also greyed.

The new PF will be with a white background ;) (so actually PF, unlike the current offering)
For the non-PF, Grimlore's Grimoire will have a color cover, but the rest of the doc in greyscale.

These spells are so good! Just pointing out some tiny bugs I noticed;

Sphere of Deceit is clearly meant to be a reimagining of zone of truth. Yet it has the material components and duration of Scaleskin.

Scornful Mantle of the Undaunted has an 8 hour casting time, which for one minute of effect seems a little ridiculous.

Thanks for pointing these out - they have both already been fixed in the upcoming version of the book (which should be released soon).

I really like this book, but haven't gotten a chance to use it cuz my upcoming game has an artificer as the only spellcaster. Any chance of an update with an artificer spell list, or are you only including PHB classes?

Hi Gamaliel,

I have not explored adding an Artificer spell list to the grimoire, but this may come in a future update. Unfortunately, I do not have a timeline, so there is a chance it will not be available for your upcoming game.

If you are interested in using the grimoire, I would recommend chatting with your dungeon master to see if you might be able to adapt this to suit your game.

Cheers,
Trevor

I love these! The one suggestion I would make so far as I've read is changing Grim Scythe's damage to be a d8 when wielded one-handed and a d10 when using two hands.

I love this, I wanted to make a pyro sorcerer and found the default fire spells lacking. My only good option is to blow my party up with fireball. Me and my gm buffed fire whip to 5d10 instead of 5d8 to match both fireball and what the dmg is saying and now I am having a blast! Also GM told me a cool idea, whispers of hellfire should deal a higher damage dice based on the creature size, but not sure how balanced is that. Anyway, I really love this!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
