Suggested Price $0.00

A Chance Encounter is a classic, low level adventure designed for a group of 3 to 4 1st level players. It should take about 2 to 3 hours to play through.

This is the first adventure in a miniseries with the following adventures being:

The Mystic Circle

An Urgent Rescue

A Dark Veil Falls

In addition to the adventure, there are a couple of maps of the adventure area as separate jpeg files. There is also a printerfriendly version of the adventure.

A classic plot idea around a backwater village, a mysterious forest and some up-to-no-good Kobolds. To show a new group the ropes of the game it is fine, the quality of the series deteriorates with the following modules, however.
As a mini campaign for beginners the modules are missing some genuine sense of wonder for me. Works as a collection of story seeds. Rating: 3 Stars.

I'm in the process of starting a podcast and was wondering if I could use this adventure and its sequels in upcoming episodes. I promise to give you credit for creating them.

Hi! I'll be playing through these adventures with two of my friends who have never played d&d before! Since there'll only be 2 players, would an acceptable solution being them starting at level 2 instead of level 1?

A Chance Encounter was really cool. I added an intro since I not only had 3 new characters but 3 players who hadn't played together. It added a lot of time to the adventure but it was also a lot of fun. I went back and wrote the intro as a story. Not bad if I do say so myself. They're all asking when we're going to play the next one. Once I figure out how to "pay what I want" after paying nothing initially, I plan on paying you for your work. Thanks

Hi John,

I also played it last week, first time D&D for the players, first time DM'ing for me. Similar to you, I wrote a backstory for each character that brought them together on the road to Myrehall. And it took me a long time to find some suitable maps for the two caves! (If anyone is interested in which I used, send me a PM.)

What did you say was in the letters to Chariz? My players insisted to know, but it seems it has nothing to do with the storyline in the end.
It still feels like a lot of loose ends (the letters, the artefacts found in the first stories, the eventual bad guy without a plot), but with a lot of possibilities. I seem to lack the creativity to tie it all together though. ;-)

I believe you can just buy it again, but with a price indicated. Planning to do that as well after finishing!

Mine didn't ask about the letters. I had planned on saying they were secret wizard correspondence sharing information about the locations of artifacts.

I had the kobolds hide behind piles of trash in the first of the caves. It surprised them since that was their first encounter. In the second trashy room, however, I had the entrance project into the room. The four kobolds were hiding behind the players as they rushed in, assuming to see the bad guys pop out from behind the trash again. I just drew the rough outline on the grid on the back of some dollar tree wrapping paper. Worked great and it was cheap!

Hi Daan, what maps did you use for this? Would love to run them when I run this for a new group. Thanks!

Edit: It doesn't seem to let me reply to Daan directly. Not sure how to PM him either...

Just a note; Chariz refers to a Wolfhead Inn, but Appendix A calls it The Bullfrog Inn. This seems to have been rectified in the sequels.

So I've playing this series with a group of 4 people, though one is consistently absent so its more like 3 players, but that's neither here nor there. Next week we will go through the last installment "A Dark Veil Falls" and whether we finish it in that setting or have to wait until the next I was wondering where Myrefall and the wolfpine forrest is in reference to the rest of Toril? Does this adventure even take place in Toril? If so which continent is it on? Faerun, Kara-Tur, Maztica? Id like to know so I can plan my campaign from that destination.

Hi Jake.

You can probably place it whichever setting you prefer with minor changes. But when I wrote it I was assuming it would occur somewhere on the Sword Coast.

My family and I just finished playing this one-shot. It was good to get back into the swing of things, but in the "final boss" battle, my three players all went unconscious and all players died. I think the enemies are too overpowered even for 3 1st level players. I would suggest others to maybe incorporate more short rests for hit points, but the main boss knocked out my player with one hit so...

Was looking for a fun easy adventure to play with my nephews with out prepping one of my own. They are both 4th level and I had to do a bit of scaling but nothing major since it is just the two of them. I did tweak the caster's spell list, changing out Charm Person and Expeditious Retreat for Mage Armor and Shield. I noticed a couple of inconsistencies. First, the sorcerer cast Magic Missile when the players enter his area; but it isn't one of his prepped spells. So, I changed that to a Chromatic Orb. Second, I noticed that the Inn was called The Wolfhead Inn in the dialog box, but on the map it is labeled as The Bullfrog Inn. Over all I was happy with the adventure and look forward to running the series.

This entire series is very easy to play and a lot of fun. My son and I just finished "A Chance Encounter" and can't wait to play the remaining titles. Appreciate the work, Kristjan!

Hi,

I ran this for my first ever session but got a bit stumped when giving a reason why the letters were hidden. I am just interested in what others did for this so I can explain more to my players if needed. Thank you.

Hello, I'm a new DM and I used this mission as an "audition" for DMing a D&D campaign. It was an awesome mission, thank you for posting it. Breaking the mission down into parts with subtitles made it very easy to read and follow. The pictures were a nice touch. I enjoyed being able to give the players a visual of an important character. I wanted to tell you 3 things I noticed during our play through:

- With the choices my 3 players made and typical party and out of character banter, the entire mission took 8 hours to complete. (And I loved every minute of it.)
- As soon as my players found the letters, they went to open them right away. If you're going back and adding more info to the document, some brief information about the contents of the letters would be awesome.
- During the encounter with the Kobold Scale Sorcerer, the document says the sorcerer will cast a magic missile spell at the players as soon as it sees them. However, looking over the list of "prepared...See more

I have a question. I am new to DnD and I want to use this for me and my friends first adventure. Is it possible to adjust some things so the campaign can work with a group of 5-6 players?

Hi Markeith C.

Sorry for the late reply.

The easiest way to modify the adventure is to change the encounters. On page 82 in the Dungeon Masters Guide, there are guidelines on how to create a suitable encounter depending on the party size and level. So what I would do is to either increase the number of monsters in an encounter, or change a monster out for a slightly higher CR one, using the rules on page 82.

Regards, Kristjan.

Its a minor thing, but the various skill checks in this module and your others should be "DC" not "CR".

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
