Path of the Drowned Barbarian

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.26

A primal path for players (and DMs) who want to build a seafaring babarian with powers gifted from beyond the grave.

Barbarians who walk this path excel in aquatic combat and have recieved blessings (or curses) from souls who lost their lives at sea. This has granted them an undead resilience and fortitude while also granting them ghostly abilities that other sailors would view as unnatural and bad luck.

This primal path gives you everything you will need to play a barbarian in a seafaring setting as well as allowing you to summon spectral chains, create grog and gain a pet psychopomp.

I started work on this path before the Path of the Depths was released due to my love for the sea and desire for more aquatic themed sub-classes (I also have a water domain cleric in the works) but when the Path of the Depths was released I saw we treaded some of the same ground so I altered the subclass accordingly to lean more into the ghostly seafarer aesthetic.

Feedback and donations are very welcome! Any donations given will be used to fund my inernship in the coming year as well as go to the artists who donated their art. I hope you enjoy!

Hi Evan

Thanks for the design - it's definitely a fun concept for aquatic campaigns!

Being able to throw a Greataxe sounds amazing. In reality, however, one should mostly expect to be throwing weapons in the very first round of combat - and only if you're not close enough to get into melee - as thrown weapon attacks doesn't work with Rage Damage, Reckless Attack, nor Brutal Critical (nor the Half-Orc's Savage Attacks).

As Boarding Chain can only attach after you've spend your bonus action to enter rage and the throwing range is 20ft (60ft with disadvantage), you will most likely find yourself in melee in the next round of combat anyway - but then you've attached a weapon for later use.

I recommend to buy two extra Greataxes and play the Drowned Barbarian as a defender by controlling several foes with Boarding Chain:
• 1st round of combat: Enter Rage as Bonus Action. Get within 20ft and throw a Greataxe (from Lvl 5: throw another Greataxe at a different...See more

I just realized how the Curse of the Ancient Mariner feature can be reliably used in its current form:
a) Walk up to the BBEG and walk out of reach again to provoke an opportunity attack (try again next turn if it's a miss).
b) Use your reaction to cause your psychopomp to dive in front of the opportunity attack.
c) Now that you're already more than 5ft away, throw Greataxes at it till you hit.
d) Use bonus action to deal 1d12+1d8 necrotic damage for free each turn while you attack with a different Greataxe.

In my original comment, the alternative suggestion "1)" would not be as necessary and "2)" would straight up counter the strategy that I just described, yet it is debatable whether that would actually be a good thing?

I still stand by my original suggestion to incorporate the Boarding Chain (BC) feature into the Curse of the Ancient Mariner (CotAM) feature to create synergy (rather than anti-synergy as shown below) and prevent confusion...See more

Wow, thank you so much for such a detailed review! I really appreciate you putting time and thought into your feedback.
I have to admit, I have been thinking about altering CotAM for a little while now (been a bit bogged up with real life stuff alas). Your idea about linking CotAM to Boarding Chain straight up is a good one and I agree it probably would create more synergy and would be a lot less confusing than how it is written currently
In your opinion then, do you think having CotAM trigger whenever you use boarding chain on an enemy (skip the kill the psychopomp phase, instead maybe have killing the psychopomp grant a buff on your attacks against the enemy or debuff the enemy somehow) would that still be balanced? Becuase CotAM is a hefty ability so I worry that making it more versatile may make the ability too powerful.

Hi Evan, thanks for asking. I think you're right to worry about making CotAM too powerful. Granting a pet similar to the Find Familiar spell would be a decent feature in itself. Thus, you should consider skipping the guaranteed damage each round and focus more on utility. I like your idea of having killing the psychopomp apply a curse on the target in the form of a debuff (and still granting you magical weapon attacks against it). E.g. disadvantage on strength saving throws which would have synergy with Boarding Chain (it might be too strong if it affects all saving throws, though it definitely would excite the casters of the party).

What currently makes CotAM clunky (as you're probably in melee when the psychopomp is killed) is that you have to hit the killer with a thrown attack to utilize the guaranteed damage each round. A simple way of toning down the CotAM damage and create synergy with Boarding Chain would be to replace the current CotAM spectral chain effect with an execute effect such as:...See more

Great idea, I appreciate the concept, but it looks a bit overpowered for my taste.

Hey there! What could I do to make it feel more balanced in your opinion?

It seems to have a lot of power at third level compared to other classes. While 6th Level seems somewhat weak. Comparing it to the Storm Herald Barbarian. I like the tenth level ability, it seems fine.

Over all a good class and fairly balanced in my opinion. Just somewhat frontloaded.

Sure, I appreciate the feedback! Personally I think being a little top heavy at the early levels isn't too bad so long as it is balanced out by making a subsequent level a little less powerful, so long as the mechanics aren't game breaking in of themselves.

Thanks so much for telling me your thoughts, I shall for sure have a think on your input!

Why doesn't this show up under aquatic character options?

Hi there, it should show up under aquatic character options. Unsure as to why it doesn't to be honest. I have updated the tags just to be sure though.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
