Southcrypt: The Upper Halls

Southcrypt: The Upper Halls is a 26 page adventure set in the Sword Mountains region of the Forgotten Realms.  It is the 3rd Southcrypt module that continues the Dungeons & Dragons starter module; Lost Mines of Phandelver.  Neither the started module nor the other Southcrypt modules are needed to play this adventure as it can be set in any location.

The module details over 12 encounters and 5 maps culminating with an encounter with a vampire spawn.  The adventure also introduces a few updated monsters such as the norker goblin, the stroper, and the vargouille.  The adventure explores the region of the upper halls inside the mountain and does not fully explore the ancient dwarven fortress or the lower regions.

Love the way you write! Played almost all of your Phandalin modules and actually sent you cash for them(!) The Phabulous Phour of Phandelver (featuring Droop) are moving on to Waterdeep and Rise of Tiamat, but thank you for over 6 months of weekly gaming!

Thank you for the kind words, it is always nice to hear back that people enjoyed them. I'm finishing my series on Princes of the Apocalypse shortly and plan on starting a series on the Essentials Phandalin box set.

Hi Keith! I'm planning to use the Upper Halls with my group as a Sidequest, but we needed more accurate battle maps because we're playing with Foundry. Following your sketches, i've redrawn the maps using Dungeondraft. Wondering if it could be of any help: for free, of course.

Have a nice day
Nicola

I never gotten that far. I planned to have a lower level module perhaps tied to Wave Echo Lake somehow with stats of a giant crossed with a vampire, but never wrote that adventure. As of now, I have no plans either.

My original thought was to create the middle and lower halls. Right now I'm working on something for the underground lake in from Lost Mine of Phandelver. This lake may tie into the Soughtcrypt Mines at some point. I'm not sure when the tie-in will be completed, I mostly make the adventures for my play-group and see where they go. It may end up being an adventure for 10-12th level characters.

Would love to see you cover the lower levels and dwarf fortress. Also where is the underground lake? I'm struggling to remember where that is.

I just guess where the underground lake is from Lost Mines of Phandelver. Guessing from the map in the adventure, the lake would be 50miles across to reach under the mountains enough to tie in with Southcrypt.

Why didn't your party explore the deeper? Is the entrance to the lower levels blocked/hidden or did they simply choose to ignore them?

I actually wrote the encounters and most of the upper levels and the players were too scared to go in thinking they would encounter the giant vampire of the lower levels. I guess the stories were too much. They were on a mission to find a road through the mountains and connect it to one of the towns such as Westbridge.

Hi Keith,
How many hours of play, on average, for completing The Upper Halls?
Thanks

The module could be played in 4-6 hours if the PCs chose a path that directly led to the main encounter with the vampire. My group plays roughly 4 hours each week and it took 3 weeks of play to finish, but they ended up wandering around a bit. I also added another wandering encounter with more duergar to get them back on track a bit. Thank you

Just a note, and a little cash, to say thanks for the first two in this series which I converted/co-opted to my own needs in my ongoing campaign, found here-

https://the-european-union-d-d-5th-edition-campaign.obsidianportal.com/wikis/038

Or at least that's one of them, the rest of the scenarios you wrote get used later on in the story. I've improved on your maps a little (I'm kidding- I got the felt tips out).

Anyway, thanks again- top work feller.

Cheers goonalan

Thanks for the kind words. I looked at your notes on your campaign and it looks like it is going great. I really like seeing how you changed what I wrote and tied it all together. It is a strange, but great feeling to see what I wrote and played through with my group being played through with another group. Makes me wish I had a log of my campaign. Thanks again.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
