People roleplay to see a new world in a new light. These rules are here to add more lights to shine that world. They help to build characters that don’t often get to star in fantasy adventures.

You can create characters who face challenges that make their victories and accomplishments so much greater. These options can also be implemented into existing adventures to create obstacles for characters that, in some ways, are more persistent than death.

Updates for v1.5:

  1. Reformatted and changed the “Challenges & Rewards” segment into “Challenges and Management” to better reflect what earned features are meant to represent.

  2. Added an alternative time requirement for the progression of features: 4 weeks with the disability or 1,000 experience points earned, and 52 weeks with it or 50,000 Experience points earned.

  3. Created a separate set of features for characters who are both blind and deaf.

  4. Blind characters no longer gain blindsight after 50,000 experience points. They instead gain the ability to hear through walls and to target creatures behind total cover.

  5. Characters with both arms amputated now only gain a doubled jump distance instead of a tripled jump distance as their final earned feature.

  6. Characters with both legs amputated now only gain 25 foot normal and climbing speed after they gain 50,000 experience points.

  7. Characters with two basic prosthetic legs have had their speed reduced  from 20 feet to 15 feet. Upgraded prosthetic legs now give a speed of 20 feet.

  8. Added the Slingshot, Swimming Fins, and Tools upgrades to Prosthetics.

  9. The Weapon upgrade now allows you to affix any weapon with the light property to your prosthetic, but you no longer automatically gain proficiency with it.

  10.  Added the Extendable Arm, Extendable Leg, Multi-Arm, and Propelled Hand magic upgrades to prosthetics.

  11.  The Magic Weapon upgrade no longer gives you automatic proficiency with the affixed weapon, and the cost has been reduced from 500 gp to 100 gp.

  12.  Removed the persuasion check from the Guide Animal’s “Get Help” action. The creature they seek must simply be willing to follow the Guide Animal.

  13.  The Crossbow Mount upgrade for Moving chairs now adds 1d4 to the attack roll instead of a flat +1 bonus.

  14.  Added the Paraglider upgrade to Moving Chairs.

  15.  The Coat of Warding upgrade for Moving Chairs now gives 60 temporary hit points to the Chair at dawn instead of 30 temporary hit points.

  16. The Flatten spell has been given the ritual tag.

Blind condition:
"Attack rolls against a blinded creature have advantage, and the creature’s Attack rolls have disadvantage."

Does this still apply to learned blind creatures?

Yes, it does. It does not apply to Mastered blind creatures because of their blindsight, the one exception being if a blind creature targets a creature outside of their blindsight with an attack.

I really like this one! Good stuff!
But, a question: Do you get back your proficiency for shields with the upgraded prosthetic or not? Can only see the weapons here, and wondering if it is a deliberate choice or not

Thank you!
It is a deliberate choice that you cannot wield shields or tools proficiently with just the upgraded prosthetic. You need a magic prosthetic to be able to use those proficiencies. Upgraded prosthetics are not that difficult to acquire early on, so I wanted to make sure there was still a disadvantage to having a prosthetic at that level.

Under Moving Chair it is 'There is' not 'Their is'.

Under Armor Class for the chair, you wrote 'You chair'; the same was also written for the Armored section of the chair.

Under magical upgrades, you wrote 'three-eight legs'.

Out of curiosity...are you disabled, or did you consult with anyone who is disabled while you were creating this?

I have not consulted with anyone, but I absolutely should.
I approached this from a roleplay/mechanics perspective, but I plan on putting it on Reddit to get more feedback, and as part of that I’ll ask specifically if this is a helpful or hurtful thing for anyone who is disabled.

Shouldn't you have done that first?

I didn’t know enough disabled people IRL when I started working on this to get feedback, so I made rules from a place of ignorance, and then I put it on the internet, and I got told what for and adjusted accordingly to make the rules I wanted to make in the first place.

But I did have to write the rules and put them up before I could get feedback

Thanks for this effort. Just be aware that there is a lot of prejudice against disability, or people who are disabled. I think this is a good piece of work. I will review it in a week.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
