————

Born of the pages of books and the meddling of wizards, the scriptorii are a people created by love of lore and magical arrogance. Scriptorii are living tomes, held together by arcane forces. Originally invented by wizards to serve them in their magical practice, scriptorii have spread beyond the towers of mages into the world below. Their fierce intellect often carries with it an intense curiosity, and wherever there is a whisper of lost lore or a secret to be uncovered, one might find a scriptorii in search of it.

I enthusiastically adore this concept and love how the mechanics are put together. The only negative thing that comes to mind is that the Volume of Darkness special ability seems to have an extremely high cost as levels of exhaustion take so long to remove and do not seem to be worth a single cantrip use, but I am no master of balance. I am not sure exactly how the rules work on this, as I would not intend on making any money from it of course, but would you be okay with me writing up a sort of extension on this concept, with ideas on how a scriptorii society might work and an example of them being used in a traditional fantasy world, along with things like rules for players being able to make them themselves and what happens if you were to write a book specifically with the intention of making it into a scriptorii, crafting it to your needs? This would likely only ever be used by myself and my friends but I felt that since it is based on your idea I should at least attempt to contact you about it. Thank you so...See more

Thanks so much, Jeb!! I'm really glad you like it. The Volume of Darkness starts out really weak, but as it levels up, I think it pays for itself. By 12th level, you can cast 3rd level spells up to your intelligence modifier. Granted, this is a pretty limited use-case, but think of it as at least one extra spell per day (1 level of exhaustion isn't THAT bad, and you get it back in a night)... and in a major boss encounter, it could be a CRAZY coup de grâce. Imagine you're going up against a BBEG, and his hit points are getting low, and your VoD Scriptorii unleashes FIVE level 3 Warlock spells, and then drops unconscious. That's wild stuff.

I'd LOVE it if you wrote something like that!! Can you please just promise to share it with me if you do? Better yet, post it on Reddit or here on DMs Guild? It'd be so super cool to read. Thanks for asking—I can't wait to see what you come up with.

I am glad you are on board with the idea! However, in the pdf it says you get a level of exhaustion for each spell level cast, which I assumed meant a 4th level spell gives you 4 levels of exhaustion, which is much less worth it. In the version of the mechanic you describe though it definitely does get much stronger. Oh, and may I ask what software you used to create the D&D-style pdf?

Ah, whoops. Sorry. (It's been through a few rounds of revisions.) Welllllll that's still at least a single third level spell. But yeah, you're right. It's weaker.

I used Homebrewery to begin with, and then reformatted it in Adobe InDesign.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
