Waterdeep Factbook

Suggested Price $3.00

With the release of Dragon Heist and Dungeon of the Mad Mage, there's plenty of reasons for groups to be visiting Waterdeep. I've gone through as much of the previous editions books as I could get my hands on to bring the old locations of Waterdeep back and available for your players to explore.

This book is intended to offer additional content for DM's running an adventure in or around Waterdeep.

 Included within are:

  • Updated maps of Waterdeep and the region surrounding it
  • Over 60 locations and their descriptions from earlier official publications marked on a map of Waterdeep City.
  • Over 60 additional locations and descriptions of villages and ruins outside of Waterdeep.
  • City Encounter table to help bring the city to life.
  • 15 City Watch and its allies to ensure players respect the law.
  • Market and black market prices for magical items and beasts.

Hey I love this guide btw! So full of wonderful information. I have to ask though… how did you decide to price some of these magic items? I agree with a lot of the pricing ideas you provided but I do find it weird a ring of protection is worth 20,000 gp

Thanks! For the prices, I adjust an items price based on the impact it would have to normal combat. A ring of swimming is very useful but won't affect most combat (2000gp), a ring of protection has a HUGE impact on most combat so I bumped up the price. The way I explained it to my players is that anything the King wants for his army (magic weapons, armor, protection, blasting) is going to be really expensive.

This is interesting. Thanks for sharing your reasoning! Though I must admit that it's odd that +1 armor is worth only 8000 gold pieces while a ring of protection is worth more than 2x that amount ^-^;

Also, if you don't mind me asking. Based on your understanding of Waterdeep, do owners of these magic shops buy magic items from adventurers for the exact amount they are worth in their shops?

Totally homebrew but I play that Merchants generally will offer 1/2 of the book items value. If it's an expensive item (100gp or more-ish) I let/make players roll persuasion against the merchants (d20+3 w/ advantage) and adjust the cost accordingly.

Thanks for the heads up Robert. I've increased the preview pages in the quickview to give a better view of what's in here. I'll fix the full-size preview tomorrow.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
