An original interactive story for level 3 solo players. Nominated for a 2019 ENnie Award!

Woman standing with sword in hands

Summary

Soldra is a beautiful, ancient city, flanked by sea and mountain and lit by the sun as if blessed by the gods themselves. But its beauty comes with a price. After a tumultuous history fighting dragons that attacked and looted the city, the superstitious citizens of Soldra make an annual offering to appease the dragon god, Bahamut. A virgin woman, selected at random from Soldra’s citizenry, is exiled to Garra’s Peak, where she is left at the mercy of dragons. None of the women have ever returned.

This year’s sacrificial ceremony does not go as planned. What will transpire on Garra’s Peak?

Praise for The Executioner's Daughter

  • "I LOVE this solo adventure. Great job!" — Anna S., @anna_shelton_ on Twitter
  • "Ashley Warren has woven a great tale that is as equally suited for an engaging D&D adventure as it is a compelling piece of short fiction. It's highly adaptive so you could use this as a hook for a larger narrative, a nice backstory adventure to give a new PC some depth, or as a break from your busy day to sit down and relax with a fantastic story about hard decisions and superstitions." — Patrick H., @nonzerosumgames on Instagram / NZS Games on Facebook
  • "This is a beautiful, moving story." — Melissa M., via email

SPOILERS

I wanted to like this adventure, as there was clearly a lot of thought and effort put into it, but it really, really didn't work for my party. (Two 3rd level characters - I doubled monster HP to compensate for double PCs.)

My (chaotic) neutral characters were both appalled at the obvious heresy of the whole town - there's no way that (LG) Bahamut would endorse such behavior, and so they suspected the High Priest of being some sort of imposter. This left them torn - volunteer to escort the sacrifice (and help her escape)? Fight the whole city? Or just skip town as fast as possible to avoid the impending blowback? None of those choices was available. I'm not sure what choice a good character is expected to make - clearly only evil characters would ask to be paid to effect a human sacrifice. For neutrals, though, staying out of it was the best they could do.

This meant that my party ended up getting drunk in the after party and crashing on the street (which is...See more

This was an enjoyable adventure, but I'm a little crestfallen to see that the rest of the series hasn't been finished yet some three-years later. Made my way through the adventure with a Fire Genasi Monk and her Animated Armor sidekick. Would really like to keep playing these two characters and even more so complete the story that was started with this adventure--it was well written with some good twists and turns throughout. A very good evening's worth of entertainment.

It feels sort of weird that the reward is frontloaded and is given before the final combat.

Spoiler

It would have been cool if instead of getting a random magic item in the beginning, the sword you get in the end had some magical effects. Its something I'd like to carry for a while into future adventures but I'll inevitably have to replace it as soon as I get a random +1 sword.

Look up ideas about evolving magic items for a way to make any existing weapon more powerful later on

Hey Bob! The images are working in the original DMs Guild listing, and I think you are viewing my titles on DriveThruRPG. I will see if there's a way I can fix that for both sites. I may recommend viewing these on DMG in the meantime.

I did see your comment on Masks & Monsters about the map issue, which I'm investigating. Thanks for the heads-up. :)

Loved this story and overall experience, so glad I choose this as my first solo adventure. I acquired other solo adventures from DM Guild but they tend to be 100+ pages long, which is generous but might also scare off first timers seeking for a brief intro. Story is not very long but full of detail, pages are arranged well and easy to read, characters are vivid, combat difficulty is pretty balanced.

One quick note, regarding potential reward from the King, I believe the intent is "Get a RARE item if succeeded in persuasion, get an UNCOMMON item if rolled lower", COMMON is two ranks lower

Loved it. This was my first solo adventure. And I have never DM'd before so it was interesting being in charge of enemies as well as my character. Had genuinely tough decisions to make, and one moment really surprised and shocked me. Glad I had not skimmed ahead. Hoping for parts 2 and 3!

Brilliant. Played as a Dragonborn Paladin of Bahamut and survived with 1 HP! Was very well written and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
